[W:1] MLB 2025

Padres going with Cease for game 2 and Darvish if there's a game 3. Looking forward to Cease walking the bases loaded in one of his 4 inning start

I'm actually kinda stoked about this year's post-season. Some compelling first-round matchups.

As bad as Detroit looked, stumbling backwards into the playoffs like a frat boy drunk after a Michigan-Ohio State game at Ann Arbor on a Saturday night, don't be totally surprised if they advance. I think part of the pressure for the Tigers was just not choking and missing out on the playoffs and hearing about their collapse. Cleveland and Detroit are familiar with each other. Should be a good series.

I'm not confident about beating Skubal three times in two weeks.

On the other hand, Detroit has been playing like a beaten team for at least a month. They went from prohibitive favorites to win the division to backing into the last wild card spot on a tiebreaker. They can't be confident at this point.

Cleveland just won a game down three in the 10th to win the division outright. Texas didn't record an out. They are flying high right now. Anything can happen. We have two pitchers who flirted with no-hitters recently, and everybody but Logan Allen is on their own hot streak. I blame the moustache.

Padres-Cubs is a compelling series. Both teams seem evenly matched. Experienced managers who have a solid in-season resume but have something to prove in the post-season. My hypothesis (theory, even) is that managers do often get better in the postseason with more experience. They learn from their mistakes. Counsell notoriously over-managed in the 2018 NLCS by pulling his starters too early. I think he gave LA's lineup more glimpses of his nasty bullpen and they adapted. But, maybe that's just cracked-pottery.

As a Cardinals fan, my reference point for what's possible will always be 2006. I know Arizona came in with a similar record a few years ago, but Arizona was hitting the ground running in 2023. The Cardinals stumbled into the postseason. Despite having the same lineup that posted back-to-back 100-win seasons the years prior, they looked like their best days were behind them and they looked like three-game sweep-bait for Bruce Bochy's San Diego Padres. The Cards found their mojo and won one series after another.

Pivetta vs. Boyd in Game One. Boyd has cooled off from his hot start, but I still follow him (ex-Guardian) and pull for him. Another guy we should have opened the checkbook for.

Boyd doesn't seem like a Game One starter, but the Cubs seem to be in a spot here. Imanaga had a lousy September. Horton's out. It's all looking good for SD.

I was a big Cardinals fan when I went to Wash. U. back in the early '80s. Coleman-Herr-Guerrero was a beautiful thing. And McGee. And Ozzie. Great organization.

Oh man, you saw them in the real when I was watching from afar as a kid. I lived in STL until I was about 5 but already had the Cards in my DNA. Watched the '82 Cards win the Series. Suffered through '85 and '87 game-7 collapses.

'85 wasn't a collapse. That was Don Denkinger blowing a call.

I wasn't there in '82. I seem to remember up and down years, but the up years were amazing.

They got to the WS so often, I think we got spoiled.

He did blow the call, but unlike most STL fans, I hold that KC won the Series fairly and squarely. Jack Clark misplayed a foul ball that was easily catchable. The normally reliable relief pitching just straight-up choked. But that wasn't really the story. The real story of the series was that a team that had maybe the best batting average in the NL was held to .190 throughout the entire 7-game series. The Royals pitching peaked; the Cardinals hitting tanked. The Royals were the better team - at least for that one week in 1985.

Agree, should go 3 games. Really liked Chicago earlier this season when they were clicking offensively. Some signs last few weeks they're starting to reignite. Really like their length of lineup with Tucker back.

Some signs of life for Tatis and Merrill for Padres. Still think Machado has to come through for the Padres to do much. He hasn't been good. Pivetta will be given a chance to go six, but Cease and Darvish will be on a short leash.

Saberhagen's big year. KC had an awesome staff that year.

I’ll be at game 2. Hopefully it will be the series win.

Best day of the year for baseball. All teams are 0-0. May the team with the most Japanese pitchers win.

Both pitchers dealin so far. Williams retired first two batters on two pitches in the 1st and then his outfield let him down with an error. A blooper moved the lone run in. Williams recovered and has been doin pretty doggone well, as his Skubal. Will be interesting to see how the managers handle the mid/late innings.

More oppo, just clearing the minor league fence.
Fried trying to get ‘Glavine’ calls faces Story.

Welp, 1 run. Tatis, Arraez, and Machado go 0 - 11 with 3ks.
