CARACAS, Venezuela — President Nicolás Maduro on Wednesday faced the gravest challenge to his authority since assuming power in 2013, as the U.S.-backed opposition claimed the legitimate mantle of leadership, and President Trump promptly recognized him as Venezuela’s interim president.
The dramatic developments came as anti-Maduro protests drew hundreds of thousands of people into Venezuelan streets.
“Today, I am officially recognizing the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, as the Interim President of Venezuela,” Trump said in a statement. “In its role as the only legitimate branch of government duly elected by the Venezuelan people, the National Assembly invoked the country’s constitution to declare Nicolas Maduro illegitimate, and the office of the presidency therefore vacant. The people of Venezuela have courageously spoken out against Maduro and his regime and demanded freedom and the rule of law.”

Apparently American diplomatic officials will ignore Maduro's order to leave and will sit tight. Why? Perhaps to force a confrontation to be used as an excuse/justification for an American armed intervention.

It is interesting that the US it seems has no problem supporting right-wing dictators and authoritarians like El-Sisi or Duarte but cannot abide a left-wing president openly elected to office, albeit under suspicious circumstances. Maduro is incompetent and likely corrupt but he is no different from many other Latin American leaders whom the US Government vigorously supports in these qualities. The only thing different is the Maduro Government's left-wing leaning.

Venezuela and Honduras are the two poles of US foreign policy in Latin America which clearly demonstrate the hipocracy of US foreign policy. In one country a left-wing government which allegedly cheated its way to maintaining power is illegitimate and brought down using sanctions, boycotts, militarised monetary policy and by openly and covertly supporting an anti-democratic opposition which could not win elections until the Venezuelan economy was sabotaged from abroad. In the other state a right-wing government which allegedly cheated to remain in power is protected, lavished with foreign aid and supported while its security services kill, arrest and disappear political opponents defending their country from a hijacked election. Is it any wonder while the people of Latin America are either suspicious or very hostile to the US state?
