Vance was a terrible choice. He's incredibly unlikable. And this should have been obvious just by looking at his Senate election; he did considerably worse than a Generic Republican should have done in Ohio. The only reason he's in the Senate at all is because Ohio has gotten a lot redder than it used to be.

He can't be replaced, he's the official VP nominee. If he drops out, then Trump officially has no running mate. He could pick someone unofficially, but that person's name would not be on the ballots and the electors would be under no obligation to vote for that person.
 
Trump never follows laws and rules. He'd just plow on with a new VP and not give a shit.
 
Elections are by and large popularity contests. Vance was able to do fine in a red state or district, but nationally he has deeply unpopular views.
