I just noticed we do not have a subsection for North America . Greenland is part of N. America
  • The vice-president scolded Denmark for not spending more on security in the region, saying they have "not done a good job" for the people of Greenland
  • He reinforced President Donald Trump's vow to take control of the island, saying that this would be achieved through appealing to the people of Greenland, and not through military means
  • Vance said Russia and China are increasing their footprints in the area and the world cannot "bury our heads in the sand - or in this case in the snow"
  • Trump told reporters at the White House that "we have to have Greenland"
  • Locals in Greenland expressed concerns about Vance's visit, with several telling the BBC that his presence threatens the island
  • Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the BBC that Vance's comments about Denmark were not accurate, and "for many years we have stood side-by-side with the Americans in very difficult situations"

We’re afraid of being colonised again' - Greenlander politician

Qupanuk Olsen, a Greenland politician with the pro-independence party Naleraq, says the country is taking Donald Trump's demands very seriously.
She tells the BBC's Maryam Moshiri that Donald Trump Jr's visit in January first sparked concerns, saying "that’s when we realised that his words are no longer just words, he actually means what he says".

"We’re afraid of being colonised again. We’ve been a colony for the past 300 years under Denmark, it still feels like it," Olsen says. "Now another coloniser is interested in us."

Olsen, however, says Greenland needs to be "open-minded" and consider strengthening relations with the US to secure a sustainable independence strategy.
"Trump is only going to be president for the next four years so we also need to think about what’s going to happen in 10 years, 15 years," she adds.

Our Vice President is an idiot, sent by a moron.
Imagine our response if the Canadian leader scolded trump for being an asshole.

They said no already. Not for sale.

  • Vance said Russia and China are increasing their footprints in the area and the world cannot "bury our heads in the sand - or in this case in the snow"
Vance says a lot of stuff. No one cares. Why should Greenlanders be concerned about trump's fears?

  • Trump told reporters at the White House that "we have to have Greenland"
What if Canada said "We have to have Alaska"? Imagine Trump's response. I means picture it. Greenland says the same.

  • Locals in Greenland expressed concerns about Vance's visit, with several telling the BBC that his presence threatens the island
They are a threat to everything.

  • Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the BBC that Vance's comments about Denmark were not accurate, and "for many years we have stood side-by-side with the Americans in very difficult situations"
Trump & co have tried hard to alienate our allies and make friends with our enemies.

I've watched trump do a great number of truly stupid things, but these stunts where he "demands" and "wants' something that simply isn't going to happen is truly bizarre. I hope someone is talking 25th Amendment sometime soon. Trump is really losing his mind.

Why the hell does anyone care what Vance says? What is there in his background or education that gives any legitimacy to his utterances?

In 2009, the self-rule law conferred significant powers to the Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut, including autonomy over the legal system and authority over all underground resources, including those within the nation’s territorial waters. Additionally, the Act on Greenland Self-Government would allow Greenland to attain complete independence if done through a referendum with consent from the Danish Parliament......

Greenlandic politicians view “large-scale extractive industries as the sole viable pathway toward achieving a self-sustaining economy.” One year later, the Mineral Resources Act was passed, granting Greenland the rights to revenue generated from mining activities and prompting the territory to seek partnerships with Chinese mining companies. In 2013, Greenland’s parliament made the decision to lift the ban on uranium extraction, allowing Greenland to participate in large-scale development.

In 2023, China’s overseas investment reached 264.5 billion in United States dollars. China fears being excluded from future economic and scientific opportunities, therefore it looks towards the Arctic to find new economic opportunities. China is not geographically positioned in the Arctic, so the Arctic is one area where it remains at a disadvantage; however, China became a part of the Arctic Council as an observer state in 2013. Due to the restrictions on China’s involvement in the Arctic Council, over time, China may pursue alterations to existing governance to align with its interests. If Greenland gains full control over all its resources and decision-making processes, China will only become more interested in Greenland and its resources.

Because China will already be prepared to increase its exploration into the Arctic resources and Greenland has to meet their economic development needs, strengthening collaboration between the two nations is highly anticipated.

Currently, China has been involved in multiple mining and icebreaking projects in Greenland, each with consequences.....

One commentator suggested that Trump is enamored with how the US acted in the late 1800s, as an admirer of our imperialist period. Bullies gotta bully after all. This is just different version of Donald grabbing *****. What an embarrassment!

As I have posted elsewhere, our grandkids will ask us about Trump with “what were you thinking?” - type questions.

Power has obviously gone to Donald's head. He thinks he can do anything. Everyone is just supposed to bow down to him, the almighty superking Donald.

Maybe the Greenlanders should take Vance on a tour of Kap København ... and leave him there to gather his thoughts and get some respite from the whole Signal debacle. About a month should do it.

Cheers and enjoy Viking Hell.
Evilroddy.

Trying to decide who is the biggest idiot here.
Trump or Vance for following the orders of a idiot.

Bet you haven't come up with any good answers to those hypothetical questions. I know I haven't.

Does anyone really care who Vance scolds?

When the leader and 2nd in command of the most powerful nation on the planet are talking about colonising other nations - and the Russian leader sides with this; the rest of the world takes note mate.

The Danes and Greenlanders are rightly pissed off, as are the Canadians and if they take it as a joke - they are being utterly foolish about it.

This is just the beginning - there are many other nations around the world that are rich in resources that America and Russia could seek to exploit.

When another country starts threatening you, you take it seriously. Denmark and Greenland understand the US has become a threat. Greenland voted a government that isn't interesting in "rushing to independence", partly because financial reasons, but also very much because of security reasons. A independent Greenland would not last a day in this climate.

Vance is America's official scold now. The west is lucky to have him.

And that was again banned in 2021..no mining for Uranium in Greenland allowed. Also pretty much all mining rights have been put on pause..

An agreement between Denmark and the US in the 1950s split the defence of Greenland between the two. The US once had 17 bases plus and 10k men on Greenland..now it has 1 and maybe 100 personnel. Danish coast guard patrols Greenlandic waters and checks fishing boats. And because of the geography of Greenland, stationing troops outside the main population centres is a waste of resources. JD Vance and Trumpets clearly don't understand basic geography...look at a freaking map.

A change of tone..backing down..twats..oh wait Trump opened his frontal asshole again.

More BS. Russia has the largest "coast" in the area so they have always been there. Yes China has been investing all over the world, because the west has not..
