Va. murder trial may become part of national debate on jail informants

In a sane society the testimony of people of people who have everything to gain by lying would never be trusted.

Ours is not a sane society--quite the opposite.

However, this is good news.

A review of this policy is needed.

I also want to see a review of police officers with little or no training in managing informants, recruiting them press gang style from people with very minor convictions- and then placing them under alot of risk for very little gain.

There have been several people murdered after being press ganged into becoming an informant due to their personal use type drug conviction. They are then told to infiltrate the increasing erratic, paranoid and dangerous Bad Bob the meth dealer's sales ring. Things then went go down hill fast.

That happened a few years back in Tallahassee. A young coed was pressed into service by the cops, and ended up dead. Thanks, War On Drugs.

It also happened in North Dakota. College kid is caught with personal use hashish (may have even been a "user to user", small time dealer). No prior arrests of any sort, and was never suspected of any large scale dealing, whole sale level production etc.

The cops give him the theoretical twenty years in prison talk. He becomes an informant and is quickly killed by a low to mid level dealer who decided to commit murder rather than risk a possible short term prison sentence.
