Something odd here! The media of one country on the payroll of another country? Isn't that what the man Putin is accused of? The charge being meddling? These images of the Ukrainian media hogs suckling at the teats of USAID hardly convey an image of independence by the hogs. And its thick with hypocrisy, given the scare campaign against the man Putin for journalism without a license in the likes of Georgia, Romania, Germany, France

<<<
Earlier this week, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) suspended. all of its projects in Ukraine. The decision was made after USAID received a directive from the US State Department to freeze foreign aid for 90 days.

Against this backdrop, the investigative journalism project BIHUS.Info turned to its readers and viewers for help.

In a Facebook post, its journalists noted that USAID grants accounted for two thirds of the project’s budget, leading to a plea for additional financial support.

I think USAID is destined for the chopping block.

Samantha Powers might need to retire.

Sorry but we've all been the victims of our 'benevolent' government carefully crafting propaganda to spoon feed to the American people, obviously to drum up further support for Ukraine.

It's shocking that an invaded country would need financial assistance...

Got any evidence that it impacted reporting, editing, or story selection?

Good! I’m glad we could help.

Its the principle. Ukraine is only an example. Can a media in country A claim to be truly independent if it is on the payroll of country B? And if as a matter of policy country B can finance supposedly independent media of other countries then why make of Putin a demon for same practices?

That's putting the cart in front of the horse. If a media is on the payroll of a foreign country the burden is on it to prove that it remains independent

That's not the point. I am not against it per se. But it also means a country like little Georgia was right when it passed a law demanding such media register as foreign agents. The west threw a fit. That's hypocritical

It kind of reminds me of Voice of America during the first fight against fascism in WW2.

Voice of America was a success and has never raised any controversy as far as I know. Because it was not operating clandestinely with some local media as a front.

The fascists (and eventually the communists) hated it just like they hated stuff like Radio Free America and other similar efforts.

There's more than a hundred and fifty countries in the world. Lots in between fascists and communists. Folks in much of them loved VOA but even the most mildly disposed would have issues with local media paid under the table by foreign governments

That's why I referenced WW2. It cuts down on that scope drastically.

Countries defending themselves from a cross-border attack may have other areas to spend money.

Yes they can. There is a difference between taking money, and being corrupted by it. For example, an regular person's donation to 47 and fElon's donations.

I would say that the Russian influence is clear in the areas where it has been pointed out. Perhaps you could show where Ukraine media has reported US interests that are not aligned with Ukraine.

Kyiv is spending it's money on defending Ukraine from the Russian hordes.

Humanitarian assistence is supporting Ukraine government institutions and sometimes the free Ukraine press.

Let me remind everyone reading this thread about the pro-Kremlin agenda of @Juin.....

I am a certified Trumpist and very sympathetic with the Russian side.

What is surprising tome is that this is surprising to some. This happens to some degree or another in every country that USAid operates in. It’s in the US interest to influence the press in the countries that we give aid to.

The US has Radio Free Europe operating in Eastern Europe.

There is no need for USAID to influence the Ukrainian media. They detest the war-criminal Russians already.

It’s important for the US point of view to be given as that country’s point of view. I’m not saying whether the actions are right or wrong. Simply that the shock and awe that it has been happening in Ukraine is surprising to me, since it happens everywhere.

Putin commenced a program of military "shock and awe" in Ukraine. The United States has supported its allie.

Of course. People are just surprised that the US uses subterfuge in the media…foreign and bd domestic, to influence citizens here and abroad. The naïveté is the surprise for me.

Money corrupts. All money, Roubles or Dollars. The thesis that Rouble corrupts but Dollars do not is nonesense. When a country, any country, puts down money it is to buy some kind of influence

You have not identified any US subterfuge. Everyone knows US influence in foreign lands is manifest.

I find this to be a good thing.

Putin offering Yanukovych $3 billion in loans to not sign the EU Association Agreement is corruption then in your own little Kremlin-loving world.
