US Supreme Court strikes down voting rights act clause

I am so against states being allowed to do things that hurt other states, especially for what I feel is corrupt capitalism and corporate welfare, much of it unnecessary. That is big with me. I have not spent a lifetime on the Constitution, that should be obvious. I think you have.

I don't see how anyone can deny that these Republican states and Justices are playing for an edge in the voting game. I may be a retired chem/physics teacher at 59-YOA but I"m still teaching and learning. I love it. The advances in technology can be overwhelming when you get behind as I have. 3-D printers are just the latest toy that scares the he double l out of me. Today we got a taste at what true fascism will look like. We already have some in the House with a gerry-mandered Country vastly favoring the Repubs. The Senate's version is the filibuster, where the minority rules. FDR was dealing with fascist saboteurs in the GOP. You know them well.
Gore lost fair and square. FDR was tempted by fascism, but drew back.

Nonsense.

Why would people be depressed that our country has progressed to the point where these voting laws aren't needed anymore?

I believe you missed the point Josie ... there's disappointment precisely because we still need it ... this might help (it was just in the 2012 election) ... keep in mind that the purpose of the decision was to suppress the vote by making it easier for those who want to suppress it to suppress it ...

Republican officials tried to change early voting hours in critical swing states like Ohio and Florida. They attempted to restrict voter registration efforts in multiple states. Republican supporters tried using intimidating tactics in Ohio. They promoted misinformation in Arizona and Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania officials acknowledged that the information was misleading, but cited budgetary constraints for not correcting it. Arizona blatantly distributed erroneous voting information to Spanish-speaking citizens. The Voting Rights Act requires multilingual ballots for municipalities that request it, but that becomes moot when the municipality prints the wrong date on the voter information card. Ryan P. Haygood, director of the Political Participation Group of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, described the efforts as a "new wave of 'third generation' voting barriers." According to Haygood, the Voting Rights Act provides "indispensible tools designed to prevent these discriminatory voting laws from taking root and becoming entrenched."

Voting Rights Act: The 2012 Election Proves Exactly Why We Need It

Why would people be depressed that our country has progressed to the point where these voting laws aren't needed anymore?

An updated formula is not a bad idea. The idea that our people actually progress is, on the other hand, a bit too dreamy for me. We can create a better institution, but not better people.

excuse me, i never said anything about you and states here did i?

It is a document in proof that i am a real christian, that is to say a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus"--Thomas Jefferson letter to Charles Thomson, January 9, 1816" ---- "When the Son of Man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory-- from the Jefferson Bible"

Because it's one less boogey man that the Libbos need to protect black folks from. Soon as the downtroddin masses don't have anything to fear, the Libbos become useless, along with their agenda.

There are alotta folks in this country that actually believe that the goal of the Left is to actually help minorities; to say it's sad is an understatement.

The Left tends to be split on the defense of minorities, but it's hard to deny the voice of minorities is usually best represented by the Left (but certainly not always). For all of the populist rhetoric of the Left, there's still enough consciousness of minority status to merit a description of the Left as a somewhat loose connection of minority groups with mass appeal.

The, "voice", of minorities? They try and, "speak for", minorities, but the Libbos are far from being their voice. I have a hard time believing that people like Joe, "Put y'all back in chains", Biden are being the voice of minorities. Al Sharpton? Jesse Jackson? Thos clowns are the worst thing that ever happened to the black community in America.

Libbos are nothing more than fear mongers, who attempt to convince minorities that without them, it would be the second coming of The Holocaust. It's disgusting to try to take advantage of people that way.

Does Jesse Jackson best represent the numerous groups out there, or does it just make for a convenient symbol for you?

Is is recognized as a, "leader", of the black community by the Libbos?

He is, but it's not like I can also suggest that Jesse Jackson is thus the Left's view of minorities. There's a lot more out there than one man.

It seems that this ruling has potentially already had some of the negative effects that we have feared.

Two Hours After The Supreme Court Gutted The Voting Rights Act, Texas AG Suppresses Minority Voters | ThinkProgress

"Texas is already advancing a voter ID law and a redistricting map blocked last year for discriminating against black and Latino residents."

It's near impossible to suggest otherwise. I doubt you could find any evidence showing that the Left's view of minorities and Jackson's view of minorities differ. The Liberals on this thread confirm what I'm saying.

How is that a negative effect?

So you are saying that enacting a voter ID law and redistricting a map to discriminate against people of color is positive?

saw that one too, but I especially liked his desire to separate church and state ...

How often have you heard from Jackson in the past 5-6 years? the guy has all but disappeared from the public stage ... no longer seen as much of a leader ...
