US soldier gets 100 years in prison for rape, murder of Iraqi girl

That creep should have gotten a firing squad, but considering what happens to child molesters in prison, a lifetime of being a rape victim himself is appropriate.

I agree with everyone who has commented here. No punishment is enough for this guy. Oh, and in contrast, many thousands of servicemen and women did wonderful things to help the Iraqis today.

Frankly, I find your whole attitude about this issue weird. So if I posted that a person committed a horrific crime and that person was black, would you feel the need to point out that not all blacks are bad people? Why can't people be disgusted about the act or acts of one or few people without having to point out that others are NOT like that? Clearly this guy and the other participants are the exception and not the rule.

It's curious, aps. My simply mentioning that US servicemen and women are doing good things in Iraq put you into a tizzy. Here is the question you still haven't answered.

The premise of your question is weird. If I posted something about being angry with my husband over his exhibiting bad behavior, would you assume that I had a problem with his good behavior? To me, your question was a rhetorical one, which is why I didn't answer it.

I have NO problem with people serving honorably. It's like I said above--honorable service is the rule--not the exception. Writing about those who serve honorably isn't all that interesting, at least for a message board.

I agree with aps. The News is the exceptions not the Rule.

Do you argue that news organizations should remind everyone that Millions survive day on freeways after fatal car accident in L.A. or that thousands survive multiple airline flights after one airline crashes in South American killing all on board?

I feel you simply think every that since one military person committed a crime you assume everyone generalizes that the whole military must be like this person. There are sick individuals everywhere, even the military. It is the exception not the Rule, as aps stated. I don't know a single logical person that hates the military as you seem to think they do.

The man should spend the rest of his life being raped. This disgusts me. I know that much good is happening in Iraq and it is sad that their are the few losers like this that muddy the water.

First, you weren't attacked, you were criticized for being entirely off topic. Secondly, no, it doesn't do anything for the discussion. In a thread that is supposed to be specifically about the punishment for one soldier, 2/3's of the posts are a result of your derailment toward an unrelated topic. If you want to talk about the good things the troops do, there are plenty of threads for that. I think even Billo started one. But bringing it up here when its irrelevant does nothing other than start fights. I'm not going to get sucked up into this, thus derailing the thread further, but like I said, this isn't productive, and your talents would be better spent debating things in the proper locations.

It seems to me that it's rather disrespectful toward those touched by this atrocity to counter every mention of it with a volley of praise for US soldiers.
There's US soldiers, and then there's dead children who were raped and murdered along with their parents and infant siblings by specific, individual US soldiers apparently gone berserk.
These are two entirely different subjects.
I think it's not unreasonable to wish to discuss this heinous incident, without a Greek chorus belting out a paean to the awe-inspiring courage and heroism of US soldiers as background accompaniment.
Perhaps it would be more appropriate if you (Currentaffairs, et al) would go sing your tune somewhere- anywhere- else, other than on a thread about a child and her family brutalized and murdered by monsters, who also happened to be US soldiers.

I'm going to stick up for current affairs here a bit by reminding people that he is not indulging in any sort of apologia, since he has quite clearly denounced the people in question. Seems to me that he is asking folks to not paint all with the same brush, and I do not consider that to be such a bad thing.

Now this is *really* off topic, and so feel free to shoot me down like a fat pidgeon, but I do offer this by way of commenting on the nature of offtopicality. Don't countless people engage in something very much akin to what current affairs has engaged in every time the subject is Islamists or their acts of terrorism, though? Seems to me that in just about every single thread discussing Islamism, somebody chimes in with some hackneyed comments about what Christinas did hundreds of years ago. UNLIKE current affairs, though, they DON'T condemn anything about Islamism and are acting solely as apologists and supporters of the Islamists.

Perhaps some of the people getting on currentaffairs case might wish to display that they are people of principle by also directing some of their ire towards all these other thread derailers? They are certainly not difficult to find since there are dozens if not hundreds of examples. If folks are giving these people free rides while criticizing current affairs -- especially considering that currentaffairs has quite clearly denounced the actions of these men while those who derail discussions of Islamists do not criticize Islamist actions in the least -- then their criticism is not really based upon principle but upon political bias.

It would be one thing, Gardener, if people were actually painting all with the same brush. NO ONE did that. So why did CurrentAffairs raise it? CurrentAffairs became obsessed with repeating over and over about all the good things our soldiers are doing in Iraq. WHY? Again, no one had said anything about this behavior being typical of those serving in Iraq.
