Looks like Obama has turned us into France, and Srakozy has turned France into US. x(One standoff with pirates has already been resolved. The French killed them and rescued 4 hostages, although a fifth one died. In the other standoff, US naval ships have surrounded the pirates who are holding the commander of the Maersk Alabama.
Interesting development. We like to call the French cheese eating surrender monkeys, but the French took no prisoners today. They kicked ass. I think we had better be doing the same, or there will be plenty of American surrender jokes in France. I don't know about you, but I would like to continue the time-honored tradition of making fun of the French, and do not want the tables turned. LOL.

with regards to France, even a broken clock is right 2x/day.
but seriously, good for them. Obama should have led the way, but as long as he follows the example, i will be pleased
Your president will have very little say or influence on events.

while i agree that Obama will not be faxing the commanders his plan for the rescue, in detailYour president will have very little say or influence on events. Its down to the commanders on the ground.
Paul.

this is the first time his admin is facing this situation. he could decide to change the "we do not negotiate" principal that we live by, and that most certainly will affect how the commander 'on the ground' acts
As long as the pirates are holding an American captain hostage, it would be moronic to try to "kick ass."
Why?
Go in, kick ass. That's what needs doing. We shouldn't play their game. We should simply start teaching terrorists, and now "pirates" that the price they pay is death, pure and simple.
Scarecrow Akhbar said:Too bad if some of the hostages get harmed before the criminals learn the lesson properly, but in the long run it'll improve the situation enormously.
Grow some balls, people.
Hardly. The pirates are surrounded and in a lifeboat. As long as the pirates are holding an American captain hostage, it would be moronic to try to "kick ass."
We can start by preaching the virtue of the rule of law by crucifying the pirates in the old Roman fashion along the coastline. We need to do some more serious and committed nation building on the horn of Africa.
Just because they have brown skin and are Muslims doesn't mean they're terrorists.
These people are common criminals who want money, not some grand politically-oriented concession from the US government.
If you're interested in deterrence, there are better ways to deter pirates than killing a little boat of pirates (and the hostage).
A permanent US Navy presence patrolling the coasts of Somalia would be much more effective.
That wouldn't preclude negotiations in future hostage situations involving common criminals, similar to what we do in hostage situations on American soil. You can always arrest or kill them (or not, depending on the situation) once the hostages are freed.

Granted, it's a bit retro, but who's to say it wouldn't be an effective codicil to the premise "thou shalt not steal"?That's out of style.
Kill'em and be done with them, nobody that matters, like me, for instance, will miss 'em.
Scarecrow Akhbar said:You think maybe we should grab people not connected with the crime and kill them, too?
Scarecrow Akhbar said:Oh, yeah, and Obamanoid demanding an expansion of permanent US presence overseas. Go figure.
Scarecrow Akhbar said:A better solution is to identify the nationality of the pirates and bill their nation the cost of the vessel and cargo that was lost or may have been lost by their citizens, and deduct it from the foreign aid money we're wasting on them, add it to the principal of their IMF loans, or, most effective, withdraw it from the swiss bank accounts of their national leaders.
Scarecrow Akhbar said:Negotiations are pointless if they know you're going to kill them afterwards. They won't negotiate.
Scarecrow Akhbar said:Therefore, just do what's necessary to kill them. If it's a ground based situation, perhaps it's possible to extract the hostages, but the primary goal should be the immediate deaths of the criminals.
That's how kidnappers are deterred.
I think for the next three years every cargo-ship should have a small detachment of commandos. See how long piracy will last when the uncertainty of the International Response turns into the uncertainty of "if this ship will bite harder than us".

Then it looks like those moronic French have more balls than we do.
I like to make fun of the French as much as anyone, but the truth is they really do have some extremely badass commandos. It's probably the result of all those young men growing up over there hearing how much we make fun of them and getting mad. Then it looks like those moronic French have more balls than we do.
Ya they also had more hostages.
The US Navy should just offer to take them back to Somalia and not arrest them if they let the captain go. It's not like these guys have much leverage to demand ransom.
