US Links $1.9 Billion in State Disaster Funds to Israel Boycott Stance

This has always been a tool the federal government used. My first awareness of it was when they imposed the 55 MPH speed limit in 1974. States that refused to set the 55 MPH speed limit, were denied federal road repair funds.

The Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act was a bill in the U.S. Congress that included the National Maximum Speed Limit. States had to agree to the limit if they desired to receive federal funding for highway repair. The uniform speed limit was signed into law by Nixon on January 2, 1974, and became effective 60 days later, by requiring the limit as a condition of each state receiving highway funds, a use of the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution.

No, that is a law passed by congress where new money has strings attached, not a wannabe-dictator president pulling strings out of his ass and withholding money the states are legally owed.

That is not how I would spell "will".

well, since that wasn't my argument....

 Trump is taking powers expanded by Democrat Presidents before him, and I warned ya'll then you would not like the precedent you were setting.

Wait until he decides he can ignore SCOTUS rulings. :) Ya'll are going to blow your top, and be very, very angry when I ask who among you was upset at Biden over that sort of thing.
You are absolutely desperate to defend your tribe and pretend it’s our fault that your tribe is doing this horrible shit.

Nobody forced your side to do any of this.

Nope. I left the GOP back when they decided to abandon conservatism in favor of this kind of nonsense.

Because tRump wouldn't have been able to do anything if not for those evil Democrat Presidents before him? Quite the fall equivalence being set up, slowly beginning to defend MAGA it appears.

Yeah, there's absolutely nothing wrong here.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. states and cities that boycott Israeli companies will be denied federal aid for natural disaster preparedness, the Trump administration has announced, tying routine federal funding to its political stance.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency stated in grant notices posted on Friday that states must follow its "terms and conditions." Those conditions require they certify they will not sever “commercial relations specifically with Israeli companies” to qualify for funding.
The requirement applies to at least $1.9 billion that states rely on to cover search-and-rescue equipment, emergency manager salaries and backup power systems among other expenses, according to 11 agency grant notices reviewed by Reuters.
The requirement is the Trump administration's latest effort to use federal funding to promote its views on Israel.
The Department of Homeland Security, the agency that oversees FEMA, in April said that boycotting Israel is prohibited for states and cities receiving its grant funds.
FEMA separately said in July that U.S. states will be required to spend part of their federal terrorism prevention funds on helping the government arrest migrants, an administration priority.
The Israel requirement takes aim at BDS, the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement designed to put economic pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories. The campaign's supporters grew more vocal in 2023, after Hamas attacked southern Israel and Israel invaded Gaza in response.
“DHS will enforce all antidiscrimination laws and policies, including as it relates to the BDS movement, which is expressly grounded in antisemitism,” a spokesperson for Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said in a statement.
The requirement is largely symbolic. At least 34 states already have anti-BDS laws or policies, according to a University of Pennsylvania law journal. The BDS Movement did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The American Jewish Committee supports the Trump administration's policy, said Holly Huffnagle, the group's director of antisemitism policy. The AJC is an advocacy group that supports Israel.

Under one of the grant notices posted on Friday, FEMA will require major cities to agree to the Israel policy to receive a cut of $553.5 million set aside to prevent terrorism in dense areas.
New York is due to receive $92.2 million from the program, the most of all the recipients. Allocations are based on the agency’s analysis of “relative risk of terrorism,” according to the
More lawsuits on the way.

The Federal Government can attach a wide array of requirements to receipt of federal funding....
Vague to the point of being meaningless.

If you have an actual supportable argument, post it.

Nope. But his ability to abuse his power is greatly expanded by the precedent laid down by democrats who thought it was okay because their intentions were good.

No, I mean hedging disaster relief assistance against the political stance of local governments.
I agree.

To clarify my previous post, I was referring to @cpwill‘s vague and unsupported assertion;
The Federal Government can attach a wide array of requirements to receipt of federal funding....

The Federal Government can attach a wide array of requirements to receipt of federal funding....

....which states, municipalities, and others need to consider when they are deciding whether or not to become dependent on those funds.
Can we just keep our money here in California? We would be just fine. We don’t really need the rest of America.

Cascadia sounds better every day.

1. As I stated, I think this is a destructive and terrible precedent.
2. States do not have a Constitutional right to federal funds.

You know how Conservatives keep warning ya'll that if you keep expanding the government's power, one day it's gonna wind up being used for purposes you don't like....?
So this was their plan all along.

Got it.

I encourage you and all progressives to look into this neat thing called "Federalism".

If you want a single payer healthcare system - you can do that.
If you want a minimum wage of $25 an hour - you can do that.
If you want to jack upper income tax brackets to 90% - you can do that.
If you want to get rid of prisons on the theory that all criminals are just misunderstood miscreants - you can do that.

You just gotta pay for it.

California is a net payer to the feds. We pay more in taxes than we get back.

We keep that money we can handle it all ourselves.

We can let them keep their military bases here in exchange for providing security for us.

A nice capitalist solution.

Security against whom? The recrudescence of the Empire of Japan?

No, you still get to pay federal taxes under federalism. We just reduce the size of the federal government so those taxes are lessened :)

You want Californians to still have Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, TANF, SNAP, etc?

If you want Progressive Utopia - you can have it! You just have to pay for it.

That always seems to be the sticking point with you Progressive States :-/.

Or wait until Trump decide to expand the Supreme Court. Dems here were all for that about a year ago. But somehow I think they will come out against it if trump were to propose it.

We have what, the sixth largest economy in the world? Grow food. Have harbors. Have to build some desalination but that was coming anyway as the Colorado dries up.

We could likely just keep our money and do all of the things you mention.

We could just keep paying the taxes we’ve been sending to Washington to support red states to our own state.

Ironically would need to close our borders to the rest of the remaining 49 states.

Thank god I didn't vote for Trump.

Actually, the American government has been "Israel First" for decades. Trump is just more brazen about it.

The USA has more of a Jewish population than Israel does...
