In another thread some days back we were discussing Trumps vague claims of 75 countries already being lined up for trade negotiations. The gist of the discussion was that the 75 nations Trump claimed were very likely just another lie. With that thought being reinforced by the fact that when questioned about this, Trumps officials just ran for cover and refused to provide any details. As part of that discussion I suggested that Trump (and his team) would never name these countries because they didn't exist (yet?) and if they said that country 'X' was doing something they weren't, that countries leadership would likely just publicly deny the lie, hence embarrassing Trump (if he is capable of feeling that emotion). I figured even Trump wouldn't be that stupid.

BUT, then Trump not only lied about being called by a countries leader, but he chose to lie about the one country who was absolutely guaranteed to expose that lie. The one country that every set of eyes is on because of how important US trade with the country is. Trump lying about being called by President Xi of China was just so incredibly stupid and cringeworthy that I really never believed that even Trump could be that stupid. He does a lot of stupid and mindless stuff, but this has to be almost the lowest low in outright stupidity. And then in typical Trump fashion he will now try to intimidate any reporter who asks him about the fully exposed lie. Latest response I saw was Trump answering a question about this supposed call by saying "I have talked to President Xi many times". In other words, I have talked to Xi many times in the past, but absolutely was lying about this latest claimed call. He is just hoping that enough of his cult are too stupid to realise that.

So ask yourself why he lied about this? He lied about it to protect his own ego. Nothing to do with what is good or sensible for America. Just Trump doing stupid stuff to make himself feel better about his own inadequacies. What a leader!!

I don't particularly trust the CCP either, but if you watch all Trumps evasions when questioned for details since this was made public, it is very obvious who is doing the lying this time. And it is not as if this sort of lie is out of character for Trump. It is however surprisingly stupid even for him.

@Ishm this above is pretty much the answer to your question. As you can see, Donald is for all practical purposes a replacement for Jesus Christ in the eyes of his cult members. They cannot even conceive of the idea that Donald could ever lie, ever be wrong, ever be unknowing. He is perfection incarnate to them: the embodiment of absolute truth and purity.

Donald knows this, hence the lies. Donald knows that he can lie about anything and everything, and not once will @RetiredAtLast will question it, challenge it or express concern about it. There is nothing Donald can to do to or in front of @RetiredAtLast to shake this absolute loyalty. Thus, simply put, Donald does not care because there are no consequences to his continued lies.

Donald could tell @RetiredAtLast that he's fitter than an olympic skier, and @RetiredAtLast would have no choice but to praise Donald's physique and fitness.

Never underestimate Dear Leader! He has assured us other nations are lining up to kiss is ass (which must be a lot of nations, because Dear Leader's ass is yooge and can be kissed by multiple nations simultaneously)!

I think he is just realizing that he can get away with any crazy piece of smelly, watery, diarrhea-ridden $h-t he can pull out of his a$$, and his base will eagerly and enthusiastically eat it up and beg for more: cat-eating Haitians, cancer-causing wind turbines, secret Kenyan birth certificates, etc, etc... I think he is just pushing it to see how far he can push it and still get away with it. As of today, there still seems there is no limit to his supporters' dietary restrictions on his anal output they are willing to eagerly lap up.

That Trump is a compulsive liar isn't an opinion. The Chinese are never to be trusted, but after comparing statements, it doesn't look like negotiations are happening. If they were, and Xi is lying, Trump could prove that by giving us some details. He won't. Pretty open and shut case.

Wrong. We know it's possible. But given a choice between believing the President speaking to his own people, or a Chinese Communist who would like little better than discrediting an American President, I'll believe our guy.
We expect that Libs will prefer to believe their fellow travelers in China. After all, they believed the Russians for years until that turned out to be Lib BS.

You have libs on the brain. Normal people, those who can discern truth from lie using logic, who come in all political flavors, can see that Trump hasn't revealed a thing. This so-called "speaking to his people" is an unsupported assertion with no details. It's impossible to discern the veracity of Trump's statement because of this. He's not speaking to the people. He's telling us nothing. That Xi is essentially calling Trump a liar and Trump DOES NOTHING to counter Xi's statement, tells me exactly who's lying.

I understand that thinking critically has always been hard for you guys, but I can't imagine ever thinking it was a good idea to post about my lack of it on the Internet.

The choice isn't between "believing" either side - it's about thinking critically, vs. unquestioningly believing what you're told.

If they were actually talking, China wouldn't have denied it, because that would damage their position in the negotiations supposedly occuring.

It's considered unsupported when details aren't given. I'm absolutely certain Xi would have simply kept quiet or confirmed negotiations had they been initiated. This isn't Trump's first go around with China. Has Xi lied before about trade negotiations with Trump?

They didn't. Xi has no motive to lie about it. It has no effect on either country's sanctions against the other, and it has zero political effect on him or the Chinese population because, unlike Trump, Xi Jinping has no internal political pressure whatsoever. Zero. The Chinese have the luxury of not giving a flying **** if ten million people in China lose their jobs and starve to death, because unlike the US, they never have to plan for a two year, or 4 year, or 8 year political turnaround. Xi Jinping is already "President for Life" and is immune to pretty much anything Trump says or does. That's why he called Trump's bluff. Jinping has nothing to lose, and Trump has everything to lose when his stupid tariff plan goes south.

Conversely, Trump has every imaginable reason to lie about how countries are clamoring to strike a deal with him, and he can pull numbers like "75 countries" right out of his ass. Trump has been hammered by his collapsing polling numbers caused by the whiplash he threw into the stock and bond markets, and was hoping that pretending everything was going his way - going "as planned" - he would calm the markets, save face, and yank his own ass out of the ditch. He knows his moronic minions will believe any bullshit he tells them, and they will come to his defense - just as they repeatedly have here on DP.
