The force that reached Kiev in 2022 was designed to prevent Ukrainian reinforcements from reaching Donbass where the main Russian invasion was taking place, and it was designed to force negotiations between Putin and Zelensky. It worked on both accounts.

Ukraine never had the slightest chance to win against a nuclear-armed adversary. This was well-known long before 2022, but US political elites foolishly believe their sanctions would collapse the Russian economy, forcing a Russian retreat from Donbass. Russians will not tolerate a hostile military alliance on their western border regardless of which flags those militaries fly.

What happened when Yanukovych agreed to early elections and pulled police forces from central Kiev? Rioters seized buildings and forced Yanukovych to flee for his life.

Ukrainians were divided in their support for Maidan just as they are about many things. Americans knew that, and they exploited those fissures as a means of bleeding Russia. They failed.

By fomenting a civil war inside Ukraine in 2014, Americans knew a Russian invasion sometime in the future was likely. When this happened in 2022, US elites expected their sanctions to cripple the Russian economy and possibly toppling Putin in the process. Millions of Ukrainians have been maimed, killed, and displaced since that cynical ploy was put in place 11 years ago.
