U.S. officials went door-to-door in Greenland to find anyone who wanted to be visited by the Vances. They found no one (1 Viewer)

Righties will be SO offended, they will demand Trump take over Greenland NOW.

While there is humor in this, make no mistake Donald wants Greenland!

That is an extension of his demand that Canada surrender to being the 51st state. Note what USA would look like with all of Canada AND Greenland!

Then remember he's wants the Panama Canal too and has already arrayed federal troops along the southern border with Mexico.

One nation, under god from coast to coast to coast - Central America to the Arctic.

I think he will act after the mid terms but before the new members (a Democrat majority) can be sworn in. That same congress will give him "emergency powers" enabling him to 'suspend" elections.

You're obviously closer to the topic than I am but I wonder how much has to do with schools. I keep saying that American schools are designed to produce proud, loyal citizens, not informed critical thinkers. People of a certain level of intelligence, slightly above average, can and do read stuff for themselves, inform themselves, but the whole left side of the bell curve is easy to manipulate.
I used to work now and then with an Ironworker who had dual citizenship and an American wife and he lived close to the border near Point Roberts, Washington. There were certain tax advantages around mortgage payments for Americans and for booming out, working out of other locals, so I asked him why he didn't live across the border. He said he didn't want his kids going to an American school, like he had.

Republican politicians and the economic elite have exploited people's ignorance and eroded trust in facts and science for many decades. They should have acknowledged that they went too far after Trump’s first presidency and January six. Instead the Republican leadership and their oligarch friends double down in their support of Trump.

Theres LOTS of reasons why I'm not proud of the USA.

Anyone who is "proud" at this point....well thats just sad imo. The US is a parody of its former self. A complete joke.

Thats not to say there isnt some hope we could get back there again, but I wonder if it can happen with the sheer numbers of idiots walking around loose. I doubt it.

People in the US and all across the world are now organizing and fighting for democracy. That you need grassroot movements to fight both the far right and ignorance.

I remain a proud American. Nothing Traitor Trump could say/do to change that.

Hear! Hear! (y)

I too am a proud American, even as I am embarrassed by her current government.

We are the People, and the Constitution is ours. Our government and some of our fellow Americans have lost their way, but not all have and many of us still love and support the Constitution - which is ours. I don't care if I end-up being the only one left in proud defense of this Great Experiment, I'll still support it.

I actually stopped being 'proud' when I discovered we had a written policy and legal brief defended by the White House Presidentt for torturing Americans in our custody. We lost all the moral authority we dared claim to be proud of. Traitor Trump just further institutionalized our moral ambiguity. I am still loyal but I am not filled with any goosebumps when our national anthem is played or our flag is unfurled. That feeling is not in my bones, not inside me now.

I must admit the bolded did hurt. And under Obama, too.

We can still love this Great Experiment and our Constitution, even as we hate the current government.

There's never been an experiment like this, and part of that process leaves times of going bad. Just as it leaves times of going good.

We once had an armed Civil War, for krissakes. We massacred Native Americans, and enslaved men & women of colour. We interned Japanese families. There's been bad times before. Very bad times.

I’m not familiar with any “written policy and legal brief defended by the White House Presidentt for torturing Americans in our custody”.
The specific policy title, EO number/date, or other identifying information would be helpful.

The one act that you refer to is what caused your loss of pride in being an American citizen?

Over more than 250 years in existence, considering all of the good and bad things done in the name of our country, this single action you purport is all it took for you to no longer be proud of being an American?

I must have a much thicker skin because even considering all of our failures/wrong actions weighed against all of the good that has been done by America/Americans here and around the world, on balance I remain proud of my country and identifying as an American.

Traitor Trump’s election in ‘16 and especially his reelection last year are inarguably very negative indicators of where many (not the majority) of Americans think we should be heading.

That the orange shit stain won by the smallest margin since ‘00, failing to win the majority of votes and is being challenged on every single unconstitutional EO, that many of his own voters are turning out at town halls giving their MAGAt Reps hell, his poll numbers remain underwater, and more gives me confidence that our country will survive the MAGAt movement.

I don’t need to feel goosebumps at the sight of our national flag or playing of our national anthem.

My sense of pride isn’t tied to any public displays of patriotism.

That’s the kinda stuff MAGAts lose their microscopic minds over.

I suspect the poster is referencing Obama's establishing Gitmo. That was indeed a sad day in America's history.

The rest of your post is right-on though, and I posted as much directly above.

The woesayers are too easily forgetting the many difficulties in our past.

My greatest shock was moving back to Canada after high school and finding out I had been lied to for four years...that there really were other nations that fought in WW2.

Then, gasp, that France has had a constitution too, and longer than America who invented freedom.

Much later I learned that most of the developed world had universal health care while America had none but America had a military four times the size of the rest of the world put together but couldn't beat some pajama wearing Asians in a remote jungle.

Then I found out Richard Nixon was dishonest.

To live is to learn. To learn is to make yourself miserable as ignorance really is bliss.
BTW - Point Roberts is a ghost town right now.

Wow. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I'm going to start a thread on it, tomorrow. I might use the article, below.

I was a Bernie Baby in '16.

I'll be more than happy to do it again.

Though I'm still torn as to whether to go harder Left, or Moderate through Shapiro.

It's a problem all along the border.

It will get much worse. As soon as reciprocal tariffs kick in Canadians will have to pay an additional 25% customs duty when they head back over our border.

This will also apply to online orders from the US.

I'm not American so I can't answer with the same insight - did those events actually threaten to change or override the Constitution in the same way?

To me - apart from continuing lack of equal rights, the Civil War was to establish the federal supremacy of the United States government; the massacre of Native Americans and slavery sat within the general spread of white led expansion of native land by the Government and internment in WW2 was for security reasons (however badly thought out or acted upon). Nothing seems to threaten the basic tenet of the Constitution and separation of powers as much as an Authoritarian President issuing such devastating Executive Orders (having a supine Congress) who actively seeks to colonise other nations outside of traditional American territory and in some ways, take apart the critical independence of the press and the public to scrutinise his actions.

I hope you have a Constitution after Trump, hope it carries the same gravitas it finally had once equal rights were given to all born in the USA that would and should be classed as citizens.

My search puts Gitmo, as a terrorist destination, with the prior administration.

Obama signed an EO to close the jail but was overruled in a bi-partisan effort in Congress.

How pathetic can it get?

Making America Great Again
Maybe Greenlanders are just jaded, tired of the constant procession of world celebrities clamouring for their attention. Must get tiresome, prominent world leaders lining up for seats in their living rooms.

It seems like this administration only understands hard power, which is why I think it's probably destined to fail in achieving whatever objectives it may have. In addition to its rampant corruption, which will also seal its fate (and perhaps ours as well).

It's unsurprising that the people of Greenland don't want to participate in a photo op with the leader of a country that wants to conquer them.

What's surprising is that we are planning visits after threatening them.

JD Vance was apparently shocked to discover it was cold in Greenland.

Is it any wonder nobody wanted to visit with him? I mean the man makes an Elmo doll that giggles look intelligent.

Nobody told him Greenland is cold? Why would he need to be told?

Considering JD would likely want to hump the couch, I can see why no one wants to be visited by the Vances.

I too am a proud American, even as I am embarrassed by her current government.

we are mostly all in the same boat and love our country Chom

We are the People, and the Constitution is ours.

yes it is, but has been eroded and eventually will be replace.

Our government and some of our fellow Americans have lost their way, but not all have and many of us still love and support the Constitution - which is ours.

yes they have. back in the day i studied Constitutional Law and we have a great system.

that system is now basically over.

we are moving from a system of Constitutional Law to a new one called a 'Technocracy'; our new country will be the Amercan Technate and run not by the Government but experts in military, science et al. the American Technate will be very efficient as fascism really is and accomplish national goals much faster than has the United States in the past. this is backed up by over 6,000 American Oligarchs who support the Orange guy and musk

the basics of this are easily found in goooogle:
i was publishing a deeper dive into this, but it was toooo much for this forum. so for now, we will just go into the basics of American Technocracy.

I don't care if I end-up being the only one left in proud defense of this Great Experiment, I'll still support it.

you have a good heart Chom, but should be aware of the reality that this Orange Coup is pulling off with full support of the banks and military industrial establishment.

please take some time to look at what goooogle has dug up on this. your opinion can be quite interesting.

thanks.
