Looks like Pelosi's visit to Asia is going to skip Taiwan, as the US knuckles under to Xi's pressure:

U.S. House Speaker Pelosi Begins Asia Tour, No Mention of Taiwan

BEIJING, July 31 (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi starts a tour of four Asian countries on Sunday, her office said, without mentioning Taiwan amid intense speculation she might visit the self-ruled island claimed by China.

"Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leading a Congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific region, including visits to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan," her office said in a press release.

The release said the visit would include those countries, but did not specify whether Pelosi, who is number 3 in the line of presidential succession, might make other stops.

Good. Going there would accomplish nothing positive.

If Pelosi doesnt visit Taiwan it would mean the US gives in to Chinese threats and will only bring more destabilization in that region. That would be a blatant example of bad leadership.

I think she should go and make a big scene about it. If she doesn't get shot down, when she lands she should give 2 big middle fingers in the direction of China and dare them to shoot her down when she leaves.

"And if she goes it would mean stirring up trouble and igniting a war between us and China."

Either way Trumplicans are gleeful because both choices give them something they can whine about.

I think whatever support and meetings we offer the Taiwanese should be strategic and less about photo ops. The bluster from China was silly, and I don't think anyone was expecting military action as a result of the visit despite their claims. I am curious how the situation in the Asia is going to play out; particularly with Taiwan should the Chinese seek to implement their re-unification plan.

What's been clear over the past two administrations is the US is not eager to enter into direct conflict with other nuclear nations. We have not taken direct military action against the Russians in all of their exploits in Ukraine, so the Chinese could take the gamble that the US won't do anything should it decide to invade. Biden has stated the US would, but the retraction of that comment by the staff shows otherwise. We have a lot more to lose by a conflict with China than with Russia, and our distant involvement in Ukraine against a nation with less ties to our economy does signal a bit more leverage for the Chinese.

I'm betting tht's what will happen.

True. But not going there makes us weak in front of China. She needs to call China's bluff. It may curtail their outrageous threats.

You know nothing about how the Chinese think. Ive lived as an expat over there for years.

If she doesnt go then the Chinese will view it as a weakness, and will be more inclined to invade Taiwan. If she goes, they will be scared and back down.

Bully for you. Trumplicans will whine in either scenario.

All the never go anywheres are being goofy and talking foreign policy. Yay.

Lol, if Pelosi doesn't go to where no US president has been to since ... 1960, it is proof China controls the DNC!

But only the DNC!

😂

China knows that we can go there whenever we want. Doing it to escalate is not beneficial, though.

The Administration has handled this very badly, from the man in the Oval Office down to various lower officials, who publicly advised Nancy not to go.

Supposedly, the Emperor warned the Oval Office gentleman not to play with fire. If he did say that, the man from Delaware should have promptly but courteously told him that no one should speak to a presumed President of the United States that way and then should have hung up.

It is very likely that she is not going.

So the Chinese media are going to have a field day crowing over their successful intimidation of a paper tiger.

And many Asian nations are going to lose respect for this country and wonder whether they had better start kissing up to China.

I disagree. I know how bullies work and how to deal with them. Running from them isn't the answer.

It's better to choose one's battles.

I hope she decides to go to Taiwan. Anyone who get's China's balls in a knot is aces in my book...even Nutty Nancy!

It's probably best to not go there right now. She can go back in a few months, after Xi has secured his third term and doesn't feel he needs to prove himself.

I guess she's getting in a last taxpayer funded vacation before she gets booted as speaker (again).

This is only an issue because of the weakness that Biden has exhibited since gaining office. Remember, right out of the gate they lectured Blinken on human rights and BLM. They never would have made these threats if we had strong leadership, as when Trump was President.

Or it means she's being intelligent and rather than going to engage in provocative, pointless maneuvering, she's decided to take a more level-headed approach.

Various news outlets have confirmed Pelosi will visit Taiwan.

She is visiting Taiwan. So much for being intelligent and level-headed.
