Two questions,... what is the purpose of education? AND what truly matters??

Aside from "Reading, Writing, & Arithmetic" what topic is truly essential to learn?

As I see things,... the not-so-simple, unpleasant truth is that the mismanagement of natural resources, where demand far exceeds supply, has adverse economic impacts that cause societal chaos.

So why does the mismanagement of natural resources continue decade after decade, AND why does the miseducation of students about the subject of climate change persist in America? Perhaps the reason for these two failures lies in an educational system that hasn't asked itself two fundamental questions:

• What is the purpose of education?
• What truly matters?

NOTE while I work on a voice over script,... have a temp soundtrack for the story board images.

Depends. For some, the purpose is to produce informed critical thinkers. For others the purpose is to produce proud, loyal citizens. The curriculum and the way it's presented depends on which group is making that decision.

There is a phrase, "An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival," which is often attributed to Thomas Jefferson, signifying his belief that a well-informed public is essential for a functioning democracy and the preservation of freedom

Sadly IMHO seem the people are not well educated

The purpose of education should be to enable people to think for themselves. Useful subjects are physics and history while the most harmful is religion.

Athletics and civics. And maybe try to teach kids that people who hold opposing political views are not the devil.

To better understand who we are as individuals and as a group and the consequences today of our actions from the past.

The purpose of Public Education is to help create politically, socially, and economically functioning citizens......end of story....

Actually have a physics degree BUT before going to university went to various Catholic schools for my primary education,... so I've taken more than a a few religion classes (even at the university where I read an English translation of the Quran for shits and giggles)

Basically I don't take religious texts as being literal,... rather I find religious text such as the Bible and Quran interesting historical documents/stories that are thousands of years old (AND which are meaningful today to 2+ billion people who are self proclaimed jews, christians AND muslims)

Sadly all too often people don't take the time or effort to ponder the moral "theological" lessons of ancient religious texts

As a kid in catholic school learned that the stations of the cross were the way illiterate people were taught an important lesson

Also as kid remember watching a devil on a shoulder of a cartoon character,... basically the devil on a shoulder of a cartoon character is suppose to be a metaphor device to indicate a self destructive behavior to oneself (or perhaps others) based on the theological thoughts of St. Augustine AND St. Aquinas

Something else I learned (as a kid in catholic school),... and makes sense in terms of game theory maximizing return AND minimizing downside risks

Pascal's wager is a philosophical argument that posits that people are essentially gambling about whether or not to believe in God. The argument was developed by Blaise Pascal, a 17th century French philosopher, mathematician, physicist, and theologian.

The argument is based on the idea that people are faced with a life-defining gamble when it comes to their belief in God. Pascal's wager is based on the following assumptions:

People can choose to believe in God or not

God either exists or does not

If God exists and a person believes in God, they gain infinite happiness

If God exists and a person does not believe in God, they receive infinite suffering

If God does not exist, then whether a person believes in God or not, they receive some finite gain or loss

Another thing I learned as a physics student in a catholic high school, is the "gedanken experiment" (basically Its a German phrase meaning "thought experiment," referring to a hypothetical scenario used in science or philosophy to explore a concept or theory by reasoning through its implications without actually performing a physical experiment; essentially, an experiment conducted solely in one's mind)

Basically watch the short YouTube doodly video I posted AND you'll see an example of a "gedanken leadership experiment" that involves religion, history and current day presidential politics

Stupid poll is stupid.

Stupid poll is stupid.

Started this thread so I could get an idea about what other considered key concepts in education

I was first introduced to the "physics" of man made climate change decades ago as an undergrad, since that time I have pondered various aspects AND now believe the reason few are willing to confront the issue head on is because students (and their teachers), fail to grasp the concept of NEEDS vs WANTS

Basically when TRUMP and a vast majority of people on both sides of the political spectrum basically ignore the concept of NEEDS vs WANTS the result is the eco system will degrade over time

Simply stated when DEMAND for natural resources (e.g. clean air & water) is much greater that SUPPLY,... its not a matter of "IF" the eco system collapses, rather the question is "WHEN" the eco system collapses,... which begs the question, what will be the response of the educational system (will it continue to ignore teaching students about various looming problems???)

Climate change should be our primary concern.

Diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility should also be a primary concern.

What are most important goals in education is students learning how to learn on their own and learning how to think critically. Everything else in education are just the tools needed to do these things well.

Cheers and be well.
