Trump's Iran bombing mission appears to have been a failure.

Huh, the actual report linked off the article doesn't quite mention storage conditions or gas vs solid state, although the produced quantities line up.

He's not my boy, and it's low intelligence to assume any condition of the Iranian Nuclear Weapons program at this point. But I get it. You want a failure attached to Trump.
 
I wonder if our military leaders even thought it possible to destroy that nuclear facility that was under a mountain.

I mean - we have had the “bunker buster” bombs for decades now, haven’t we? And we have been hearing for decades now how Iran was “so close” to a nuclear bomb - and we have known about Fordow since the early 2000’s?

They had to have calculated out whether or not they thought that this was going to be possible.

I have no doubt they executed the mission to the best possible outcome - but I wonder what the odds of “obliterating” that site were before those planes even took off.

Those trucks were moving more than just a few hundred pounds of uranium. They also didn't all go to the same location.

A successful shell game on Irans part. It has now been 48 hours. Whatever was in those trucks could now be anywhere, and more than likely misinformation will be fed through the pipeline to disrupt Mossad informants.

One must divorce the success of military action with the political outcome. The military and those amazing pilots executed flawlessly yet again, showing the might and ability of the American armed forces. Unfortunately, it may be that it did not achieve the political outcome Trump wanted. His fault, not theirs.

I think it may be early to assume that they achieved the military outcome that they were looking for.

The desired military outcome was clearly to nearly permanently cripple Iran's nuclear program.

It's not clear how close we got.

Anybody that knows anything about Bomb Damage Assessments, knows "completely obliterated", isn't a BDA.

So tell me what you know. Was the material on there or not? Did the trucks make it safely some someplace else, or were they destroyed in other attacks?
 
Was the attack successful? President Trump said that “Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.” The Washington Post reports on Iranian officials saying that “the facilities that were struck had been evacuated and that nuclear material was moved elsewhere.” The New York Post reports Iranian officials saying that “only a part of the area was attacked.” The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said “initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction,” but that “final battle damage [assessments] will take some time.”

At least one report indicates the presence of trucks at Fordow just before the strike, raising the possibility that key items and/or materials may have been removed in anticipation. Relocating a substantial amount of heavy machinery (e.g., centrifuges) would be a time-intensive activity that could not realistically have been done in such a short time frame.

Actual battle damage assessment will be difficult; the attack sought to destroy equipment and facilities that are underground and thus invisible to overhead reconnaissance. Those outside Iran are unlikely to be given access to damaged facilities to see the results. That is, we won’t know precisely how effective the attack was in destroying a deeply buried facility, and the Iranians won’t be letting anyone in to examine it.

So what is the real impact of these attacks? In the short term, assuming the attacks were militarily successful, the Iran nuclear program has clearly been set back by amounts of time ranging from several months to several years, depending on the assumptions made about how far along Iran had been in its progress towards building a nuclear weapon.

But whether the Iranian nuclear program has been permanently crippled is a different question, the answer to which involves a most important uncertainty: Will there be regime change in Iran? If there is no regime change, it’s hard to believe that the current rulers of Iran will accept this setback as establishing a permanent (new) status quo, and in the future, it’s hard to see what incentive Iran has in accepting a diplomatic constraint on its nuclear ambitions. That is: Future political or diplomatic arrangements with Iran on its nuclear program will be most unlikely. Thus, without regime change, the US attack last week is likely to be just the first of many such attacks in the future—a periodic mowing of Iran’s nuclear lawn, so to speak.

Iran, for the sake of the world, cannot have nuclear weapons.
I guess there is a third where we and others continue to play whack-a-mole every time it looks close for Iran to top a warhead with a nuclear weapon.

Trump doesn't believe intelligence he doesn't like. He prefers his fantasies instead. "The target was obliterated."

Or, in this case, "This alleged assessment is flat-out wrong and was classified as 'top secret' but was still leaked to CNN by an anonymous, low-level loser in the intelligence community." He offers no basis for his opinion because there isn't any.

Trump only has his fantasies.

The BBC continued, "The Islamic Republic's stockpile of enriched uranium was not eliminated in the bombings, according to the evaluation by the Defense Intelligence Agency.

"The US struck three nuclear facilities in Iran - Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan - with "bunker buster" bombs capable of penetrating 18m (60ft) of concrete or 61m (200ft) of earth before exploding.

"But sources familiar with the Pentagon's intelligence assessment say Iran's centrifuges are largely "intact" and the impact was limited to aboveground structures.

"Entrances to two nuclear facilities were sealed off, and some infrastructure was destroyed or damaged but much of the facilities, which are deep underground, were intact.

"The anonymous sources told US media it is estimated the attack only set Iran back "a few months, tops", and that any resumption of its nuclear programme may be based on how long it takes the country to dig out and make repairs.

"Sources also confirmed to CBS that some of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile was moved before the strikes, according to the intelligence assessment."

"The Pantagon's intelligence is wrong," Trump fantasizes.

We have a problem when our President doesn't believe his intelligence agencies.
