Trump's coronavirus speech failed to reassure, triggered market panic - StarTribune.com

"In the most scripted of presidential settings, a prime-time televised address to the nation, President Donald Trump decided to ad-lib — and his errors triggered a market meltdown, panicked travelers overseas and crystallized for his critics just how dangerously he has fumbled his management of the coronavirus."

The administration is in the "chicken running around with its head cut off" phase.

"I think we'll look back on this as a defining moment of the Trump presidency because it speaks to larger concerns that people already had about Trump — that he can't tell the truth, that he doesn't value expertise, that he doesn't take the presidency seriously enough," Rhodes said.

That pretty much sums it up.

Trump is not qualified to run this country & is clueless as to handle this pandemic. We'll see in November after they have to cancel all his rallies, especially after he gets the virus.

I just read where the Conad-19 virus is going to be a recurring, annual event.

Trump is going to make an announcement this afternoon and I'm sure it will be before the close of the stock market today. He's going to declare a national emergency, you know...... like the one he declared for the 'emergency' at the southern border and shut down the federal government for? Anyway, this national emergency is a good move, one that will save some lives. He will more than likely announce the relief package passed by Congress. It should all help to relieve some of the selloff panic of the market, at least until next Monday when it opens again.

I predict you are correct. It won't relieve it a lot with stocks backslidding so harshly, this is more than Coronavirus and the economy has been given a death blow, unfortunately. All of the closings, the airlines, oil, even gold is downsliding. None of this is good. I predict by November our unemployment rate will have skyrocketed to between 8 and 10%

I predict that long before November, Trump will either postpone or cancel the election. Looking at it from his viewpoint, he absolutely has to remain in office, otherwise, he and his entire family are looking down the barrel of some genuine legal charges that the white house will no longer protect them from.

I predict that by Party Convention time, people won't be thinking about this virus anymore.

The Republicans will be parading Trump's accomplishments around for all to see.

The Dems will be grasping for any new issue they can spin against Trump.

By November, Trump will go on to win a second term...and the screaming at the night sky will reach truly dangerous decibel levels.

He doesn't have the power to do either

The economic situation isn't going to be good in November

Not likely.

The Republicans will be parading Trump's accomplishments around for all to see.
You mean walking around aimlessly with their hands in their pockets?

The Dems will be grasping for any new issue they can spin against Trump.
The simple facts will do.

By November, Trump will go on to win a second term...
That is possible, but not a fact.

The economic situation isn't going to be good in November

Why not?

The US economy is pretty good right now...even with the effects of the virus. What's going to make it worse?

That pretty much sums it up.

This was Trump's first crisis to handle and he blew it. Simple as that.

People changing their spending habits may have some impact on the economy
ymmv

People not showing up for work may have some impact on the economy.
ymmv

The ripple effects of thousands of people (or more) suddenly having huge hospital bills may have an impact on the economy.
ymmv

The effects on the travel, tourism, hospitality, and recreation industries may spill over into the rest of the economy.
ymmv

What will keep this virus from having an effect on the economy?

The economy has been artificially inflated since trump took over, with his tax cut for the rich and dropping interest rates. So when **** does hit the fan there aren't any magic bullets left to starve off a collapse.

I've personally canceled 3 flights 2 hotel reservations and 2 rental cars this month alone. Times that by the 100's if not 1000's of other business travelers doing the same. Yeah this will hurt the economy.

Why not? Seen the tourism situation? The stock market?

These things are not on the approved talking points lists.......

Yep. Been thinking that for a long time now.

He simply cannot afford to lose power because of the massive criminal liabilities to him and his administration and, esp. crime family.

Artificially inflated???

tax cut for the rich???

dropping interest rates???

Oh...wait. You STILL think Wall Street is the US economy.

You are dismissed. (see my sig)

Why not? Seen the tourism situation? The stock market?

Really?

Do you think the tourism industry can tank the US economy? I don't.

The stock market isn't the US economy, either.

Look, the US economy is over $21 Trillion. Neither the stock market and especially not the tourism industry will damage our economy. The stock market will bounce back and the tourism industry...at $1.5 Trillion contribution to GDP...will bounce back as well.

Yeah, don't want to talk about reality I see. Good riddance....

This was Trump's first crisis to handle and he blew it. Simple as that.

How are you defining that he blew it?

Just some food for thought.
First case of coronavirus in the US was on January 19th, since then 41 people have died (22 of those in the same facility)
First case of coronavirus in Italy was on January 30th, since then 1,016 people have died
First case of coronavirus in Iran was on February 19th, since then 514 people have died
First case of coronavirus in South Korea was on January 20th, since then 71 people have died
First case of coronavirus in Spain was on January 31st, since then 122 people have died
First case of coronavirus in France was on January 24th, since then 79 people have died

The US was the earliest of all these countries to have a coronavirus diagnosis yet have had fewer people die. The US is larger than any of these countries which should mean the number of infections is greater.

I would also contend that people in the US for the most part are more mobile than most countries which should make containment a even tougher task.

Maybe the President should have done some things differently but this is not how it would look if he blew it.

Some things:
1. Trump fired the pandemic response team
2. The CDC is getting its budget slashed
3. Emergency funds are drying up
4. Trump spreads misinformation
5. The administration doesn’t heed warnings
6. The President creates a Coronavirus Task Force - half are White House staff; their mission is hazy.
7. More misinformation from his administration

Note: U.S. and South Korea had first cases at the same time. Wednesday South Korea was testing 10,000 people per day for the virus. Wednesday the U.S. had tested fewer than 5,000 people total.
