Well, being from Hawai'i myself, Columbus had even less to do with us than he did the Caribbean islands that aren't even a part of the US. We went to Discoverers' Day and then went full blown Indigenous Peoples Day when bitchy white people told us we weren't adequately respecting some Italian dude who borrowed some boats from Spain to find a trade route that he never discovered while he decimated local populations on this side of the Atlantic Ocean. As we have become a more diverse nation, these kinds of grumbles are inevitable. I grew up in Brooklyn, and in my all Catholic neighborhood, almost every house had Christmas lights. Joke was that you could drive down Ocean Parkway and hardly see any, given that it was a Jewish neighborhood. Thus “Season’s Greetings” signs were common. We made accommodations for our differences: my Italian grandma sent my uncle Sammy to light the lamps or gas or something for conservative Jews in their building; Joe the grocer, a Jew, would close on Good Friday from noon to three pm.

So we’ll adjust our language, some of us will grumble, others will raise their fists, and all of us will get over it before too long.
