President Trump demanded on Wednesday that a Federal Reserve governor, Lisa Cook, “resign, now!!!,” citing unconfirmed allegations that she may have engaged in mortgage fraud, as the administration ramped up its campaign to try to remake the central bank.

It's not a good idea for a public servant who is under criminal investigation to remain in their public service position.

craig, do you think she is being unfairly targeted with this criminal referral? If so, I'd like to see your rationale...including factual references...to justify such a position.

Powell said Trump doesn't have the power to fire the Fed Chair. Powell is correct.

You should not call for someone to resign for a criminal referral that should not have been made public (if it even exits). That is extortion. And Trump is doing it to manipulate the FED.

???

Why should this have not been made public?

The following article makes that ‘lawfare’ allegation:

Driving the news: Pulte, chair of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, posted on X a letter to the attorney general stating that it appears Cook "has falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, potentially committing mortgage fraud under the criminal statutes."

  • She took out a mortgage on a house in Michigan represented to be her principal residence, and shortly thereafter a loan on a condominium in Atlanta that was also described as her principal residence, according to Pulte's letter.
  • It further asserts that she listed the Atlanta condo as a rental property in 2022, despite having asserted in mortgage documents it would serve as her primary residence.
State of play: Pulte has been using his agency's control over the nation's mortgage finance system — it is the regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and Pulte has also installed himself as chair of both companies — to pursue perceived enemies of the president.

  • The agency has made similar accusations against California Sen. Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

So...digging through the bias in that article, it appears there IS evidence of criminal activity.

Maybe, yet (so far) no indictment. I assume it’s fairly uncommon for a residential property owner to re-finance a mortgage if (when?) that residential property is converted from being owner occupied to being rented.

???

Why should this have not been made public?
'unconfirmed allegations'.
Everyone is vulnerable. Should every 'unconfirmed allegation' be announced to the public? Should everyone resign whenever 'unconfirmed allegations' are made against them?
Oh, yeah, I was forgetting- this is Trump. Absolutely anything and everything can be justified by his cult.

Ah...

So, you want to pick and choose which unconfirmed allegation gets revealed to the public.
No. Unconfirmed allegations should never be revealed to the public by the government.

Well, that #11 poster disagrees with you.

Me? I'm just amazed at your support for lack of transparency in our government.

Trump accusing someone of mortgage fraud HOOT!!!!

Resign or be fired by the president of the United States, based on an allegation of mortgage fraud, no due process received or even needed.

There’s just something that seems so ironic about this…can’t quite put my finger on it.

Trump Threatens to Fire Fed Governor, Escalating Pressure on Central Bank

President Trump said on Friday that he would fire Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board, if she did not resign her post, as he looked to leverage new allegations around her past mortgage applications in a bid to remake the top ranks of the nation’s central bank.

Mr. Trump issued his latest threat, which would most likely face severe legal obstacles, two days after Bill Pulte, the federal housing director, accused Ms. Cook of falsifying records to obtain favorable loan terms. Mr. Pulte referred the matter to the Justice Department, a representative of which said the case “requires further examination.”

While the two men have criticized Ms. Cook for her actions, and Mr. Pulte has insisted his primary goal is to root out fraud, they have each done so in the context of an expanding campaign to oust officials on the Fed’s Board of Governors, including its chair, Jerome H. Powell.

“I’ll fire her if she doesn’t resign,” Mr. Trump told reporters in Washington when asked about Ms. Cook’s fate.

“What she did was bad.”
