Trump To Tariff Chips Made In Taiwan, Targeting TSMC

Atheist Democrats were heaping praise on the Marxist ideologue berating Trump for not taking care of the innocent food service and agricultural workers pouring across our Southern border from the pulpit. But now the complaints shift to we don't have the skilled workers to manufacture chips so the patriotic thing is to support continued dependence on the Chinese. Who cares if we live under the thumb of Chinese dictators as long as we get our consumer electronics so we can whine about the Orange Man Bad.
Are you just confused or being deliberately ignorant. I worked in Taiwan for a while in Taipei. Yes a lot of the people are ethnically Chinese from several generations back, while others are ethnically Taiwanese or a mix. None of them are "Chinese" in the way you are inferring it. Taiwan has a strong democratic and capitalist government, that is not doing a damn thing to help China. They are probably more anti China than most in the US are.

He apparently supports China's claim on Taiwan so of course anything Taiwanese is actually Chinese

Americans are luvin' it. The European open borders globalism, take all comers is over. The bumbling fool Biden is gone.

Did you know the border agents were astonished yesterday to see what happened at the Mexican border?

Guess what they witnessed?

When countries scoff at taking American goods, this is what they get. FAO from a REAL [president and not a shady shadow presidency like we had with Biden of Soros and MiniMe and Obama and Blinken. The fool insisted he didn't sign a LNG ban.
Nonsensical idiocy. like all your posts.

Nonsense. The CHIPS act was passed during the Biden administration to address this problem.
The CHIPS
Perhaps you are unaware but Taiwan is not controlled by the Chinese YET. Perhaps Trump’s takeover of Greenland and Panama will give China the excuse they need to do that.

And they failed, and will fail again. You, the consumer, are paying for Trump's stupidity. You elected him, you can enjoy increased costs on all imports from China and other related consequences.

A collection of headlines it's doubtful you have read.

Trumps policy will fail.

Computer chip foundries are very very expensive and require highly skilled people to run them.

Tariffs might make it feasible to build chips in the US for the US market, but they would be to expensive to export. Making the foundries operate at a loss.
shrug...

That's your opinion. Chip makers might disagree with you.

Unlike you I read beyond the headlines and fact-check. Unlike you I don't hang on Trump's every word as if it was manna from heaven and believe it. He lied and told you tariffs would make you and America richer. The reverse happened, and you don't like hearing about it. Tough; careful who you vote for next time; you clearly learned nothing from Trump's disastrously incompetent tariff fiasco the first time he tried and it backfired on you, the consumer.

That's my point.

When faced with higher prices for their products...and the resulting reduction in demand (econ 101)...and with an alternative that will eliminate those higher prices, businesses "will go wherever capital expenditure can be minimised and profits can be maximised".

I don't know why you are bringing this up. I didn't mention it and I haven't heard anyone else mention it.

Leave your strawmen at home, eh?
You always seem to favour the maga rhetoric over reality. Do you ever stop to actually think?
So let's say the tariffs do drive chip production back to the US. And let's pretend none of the other issues associated with that exist. Let's just focus on economics 101. Taiwan is seen as a friendly and reliable trade partner by pretty much every country that will buy their chips. They have the whole global market to supply. So when we get a new US factory built to supply the US market, it will be making chips at a higher cost than the Taiwanese competitor. That's why the tariffs are needed. So US consumers get there chip related products at a higher prices than the rest of the world who are using the cheaper Taiwanese chips. Not a good start is it? But it gets worse. These chips require a huge investment in R&D and equipment setup etc. That needs to be amortized over the volume of chips sold. So the US price goes up again.

But the US manufacturer is only supplying the US, while the cheaper products from Taiwan supply most of the rest of the world. So the R&D investments will be more sustainable and affordable for the Taiwanese. And most of the rest of the world won't want to be dependent on US chip supplies anyway since Trump or some other equivalent dick head could just turn off the supply in a fit of petulance if you forget to send him a birthday present or something trivial like that.

In other words, the big loser is the US consumer. Don't confuse this with 'critical' chips (military etc) though where cost is less important than guaranteed supply.

Why do you say it's stupid? I mean, wouldn't you rather have those chips made in America?
Biden got that ball rolling, but it will take years for them to be up to speed. This will not make that magically happen overnight.

He apparently supports China's claim on Taiwan so of course anything Taiwanese is actually Chinese
All Asians look alike to him anyway.

Better than your uninformed opinions.
Really? You post something that some guy wrote as if that is coming from someone "in authority" and I should believe it. This is identical to what Christian apologists do. This is what the GW nuts do. "Here is a report from 10 scientists and Al Gore that says the earth will burn up in 10 years and unless YOU are a scientist, you have no right to question this."

I refuse to read links without excerpts. It's like posting some headline from AOC or Jake Tapper. People think if they post a link from some writer at The NY Times that automatically it is authoritative and proof of X. Most all of media has ZERO training in instigative journalism.

I listened to a debate between Dan Barker yesterday with a Christian apologist who said the Greek translation means X and he said that comes from a guy who studied Greek for TEN years as opposed to Dan Barkers mere two years. Dan told him that his "expert" was wrong, and the Greek word NEVER had two different meanings. I researched it and Dan was right, proving once again that so called people in authority (like scientists, apologists and reporters) are often wrong.

I mean, let's see your well reasoned explanation of how temporary taxes on foreign chips will incentivize companies to make long range investments in domestic manufacturing facilities.

Should be interesting.

LOL There are no megafactories in the US that can make these chips. Not one American job will be gained and the cost to every American will be in the $1000's. Trump wants to stop taxing the wealthy and pay for it with more taxes on all Americans. It's not what he was elected for.
I'm sorry you believe that.

U.S companies where not willing to make the multi-billion $ investment in factories that can take a decade to get online. Biden got the largest semi-conductor maker (from Taiwan) to build a plant in America but it will take years to begin manufacturing. Trump is punishing Taiwan for allowing a plant to be built in America. Is that what you think we should be doing? BTW Trump rewrote NAFTA in his 1st term and told us it was now the best agreement ever made in the history of the world. Are you saying he was lying about his trade agreement?
You are probably talking about the TSMC plant in Phoenix. Funny that this was planned since I believe 2020, and is built, and they are expanding it.

I find it hard to believe anyone in semiconductors thinks putting a tax on all devices from Taiwan is a good thing.

Source: I work in semiconductors.
In the 90's, I was doing rapid research and development making the CMP process possible.

Do you know what CMP is without looking it up?

I remember reading about WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc... what did Trump do again, exactly, that was a major danger to world stability his first Term?
He let Biden win.

Your owner/shareholders moved your job overseas. He's still making a very good living, because he made a very wise business decision. The fact that you lost your job is not his concern.

You, and others like you, are simply tiny cogs in the massive machinery we call corporate America. If you were wise, you would have picked a career field that can't be shipped overseas, such are lawn maintenance or Barber.[/snark]
Yes, I have known that for ages, but when our own government sells out US workers like president Clinton did, you lose a bit respect for them.

As for my career now. I did just that. I am in a job that cannot be outsourced. I don't make as much as I once did after inflation, but I have a stable job.

The U.S. minimum wage, if earned where I live would be a relatively high middle class income.
A 10% inflation would raise our cost of living about $30 per month.
IMO, both producers and consumers benefit from keeping their costs down, and government SHOULD, IMO, control excessive income and profits through taxation, which currently the Federal tax code does NOT.
I would like to see more global trade, but only when there is a good balance.
Yesterday, when I compared my income taxes to those of Mitt Romney in 2010 where his gross income was more than 120 times mine,I found his tax rate was about 13% compared to mine which was about 20%. That is something I believe should show the tax code needs to be changed. Even Warren Buffet appears to agree.
The problem is not the marginal tax rate. The problem is the write-offs rich people have that we do not. When Trump got his tax cuts past those several years back, the marginal rates decreased, but so did many tax deductions for the rich.

I don't know how you figure 13%, but then it also depends on the type of income he was collecting. From gross pay to taxes, if you are potting enough in certain types of securities, you don't pay taxes until you cash them out.

Good. Put tariffs on our allies. Put tariffs on a country in imminent danger from China. How incredibly stupid.

If you want to manufacture chips in the U.S., do it. Just do it. If we can build quality chips at a competitive price, there's no need for tariffs.

Trump's a moron. MAGA is treason.
Not true. With our environmental costs, and employment compensations, we cannot compete.
