In one of my favorite political books, the anti-Leftist Burden of Empire: The Legacy of the Roosevelt-Truman Revolution, the author Garet Garrett, a Conservative intellectual of the pre-World War II “Old Right,” said he believed the people possessed a fundamental right to choose the form of government that they wanted, even if it was a Communist or Socialist government. That’s the kind of principle and integrity you almost never see in American politics today. I agree with Garrett wholeheartedly. It was one of the reasons why I opposed Democrats’ efforts to kick Trump off the ballot in the 2024 election. Even though I believed that Trump is a wannabe autocrat, I felt that it should be up to the American people as to whether or not he returned to the White House. And even though I believe that Communism and Socialism are evil and destructive, if Zohran Mamdani wins a free and fair election in NYC, then he should serve as mayor and enact his agenda.
