I guess that's taking states rights to the max.

In public, President Trump emits meaningless happy talk and misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic. In conversation with the nation’s governors, however, he essentially admitted he has nothing to offer them. They — and by extension the rest of us — are on our own.

...

As detailed in the Times report, Trump can only falsely direct blame to his predecessor (even though Trump has been in office for more than three years) or repeat meaningless buzzwords. As he assures us everything is going swimmingly, the governors are struggling to stay afloat.

Indeed, the bans on sit-down service at restaurants and closures of bars, stores other than groceries and pharmacies, as well as entertainment venues and schools have all been implemented by a number of governors.

Rudderless nation under Trump. I'm not surprised. Are you?

You can't see that?

What else is he supposed to do, though? Pull a night shift sanitizing the sick ward? He already declared a national emergency, and offered the nation something in the form of tax cuts. I think he needs to pressure McConnell to make some compromises and put the financial aide bill in committee. But, other than that what else do you expect him to be doing?

Unless martial Law is declared the Governors are supposed to be in the Loop, making decisions, and asking for Federal help when needed. Thats their job.

In stead many, as in Demokrats, see chaos as a ladder.

Excellent post! Totally non-partisan.

ordering the army corps of engineers to start shoring up the hospital capacity for one

Trump today from the podium: "a month ago nobody knew about this"

ANOTHER LIE

Trump in Davos in January when asked about coronavirus: "We have it totally under control"

Lets see I think its March 16th. Seems to me that January 22 is almost two months ago.

Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies. Donald just lies and lies and lies.

Constant and continual lying about an issue as serious as this is not rising to anything. Its just donnie boy being donnie boy.

Trump would not know the right thing if it landed on his head attached to a grand piano.

He should have done it a month ago. And, now, after he screwed that up, he needs to quit lying and instill some confidence. Today, he opened his mouth, and the stock market plunged live, in real time.

I agree, he should have taken it more seriously a month ago. But, he eventually saw the gravity of the situation and took appropriate measures. At least that's my read of the situation.

Resign! Since he can't stop lying and can't lead...RESIGN!

Did he?

Jared heading up the medical team; Pence in charge of the task force? You call that seeing the gravity of the situation. What's next, national prayer day?

Oh, I guess I wasn't kidding.

President Trump declares Sunday ‘National Day of Prayer’ amid coronavirus pandemic

The national prayer day **** is pure evangelical pandering. Trump, a Christian! That's a good one.

Anyway you've coaxed some anti Trump out of me when I had made a post more favorable to him. Bravo!

I still think Dems are over reacting. It's just standard Republicanism. They don't believe in government and seek to undermine it at every turn. But, when the chips are down they will solve national crisis through government action.

Be more inspiring and likable perhaps? Other than that, I am out of ideas pursuant to the extent of his power under the Constitution.

I do not want him or anyone else to be able to start declaring martial law and curfews enforced with armed drones.

He should have done a lot of things, starting from accepting WHO tests and having them ramped up ala South Korea, isolating cruise ship folks instead of spreading the disease for days there, and having adequate protected people handling them. He should NOT have downplayed this all along. He SHOULD have installed health professionals instead of censorship tzar Pence of this. We could go on and on and on.

As to the state we are in now (thanks to him), now he should be locking down the country ala Italy and China. But as always, he is clueless.

Trump is at least 2 months behind in revving up the nation to face this challenge. The world knew about China's extreme coronavirus troubles in late December. Entire cities were on lockdown. But by as late as mid-February, Trump was calling this a Democrat hoax to ruin his "perfect economy." His economy was perfect like his phone call to the Ukraine president was "perfect". Remember? Even yesterday he was sowing disinformation saying coronavirus in this country was under control.

Trump should never have disbanded the NSC medical response team. He should have accepted the WHO tests. He should have closed the airports and placed this country on a war footing in early-mid February. Revving up industry to churn out what we are going to be needing in this fight. We are woefully behind now in every meaningful metric and category. Even at this late date he is holding back the US Army Corps of Engineers that could be converting empty buildings and erecting tents for the overflow that will be inundating hospitals. In another two weeks, we will be Italy.

Trump has badly fumbled this and instead of taking charge and issuing tough federal mandates, he wants states to each have their own different plans, a hodge-podge of rules that change as you cross state lines. Crazy.

Instead of having the penultimate administrator at his critical time, we have the penultimate dumb ass. Too worried about his political "image" to make the tough calls and difficult decisions.

He should have done a lot of things, starting from accepting WHO tests and I could give a lot of other examples. As to the state we are in now (thanks to him), now he should be locking down the country ala Italy and China. But as always, he is clueless.

He's too worried about finding ways to goose the economy, just like he was too worried about boosting his poll numbers as the infection spread like an inkblot in a Petri dish, which is why he didn't demand tests and quarantines in the first place.

Would you rather the Trump administration start dictating to the States?

I'd bet many of the same people criticizing Trump for having governors manage things in their states would also turn the narrative and call him a dictator/tyrant if the Fed took over and mandated a Federal gov response all states must follow.

Each state is different with different rates on infection, populations, etc. It seems more logical to have local/state government help manage things based on their situations and have the Federal government support them.
