Trump says he ‘couldn’t care less’ if auto prices rise because of tariffs

How can we get Trump off our minds? He reminds us constantly.
On the topic, imagine if Trump said, instead of saying "I'm going to lower prices, day one," said, "I couldn't care less if auto prices rise because of my tariffs?" We would have sworn in Harris on Jan 20th.

You're heading down the wrong road......would've, could've, should've mixed with Twump in the head is a disaster for liberals.

This 👆 is what you get when one takes a snippet of a conversation out of context...and then engages in spin, speculation, innuendo and hyperbole.
He couldn't cate less because of some fantasy they'll buy American. Still means he doesn't care. American cars won't be magically cheaper.

As with his tax plan, those who can least afford it will end up paying more. And he couldn't care less.

How many US produced cars are actually just assembled in the US?

With most if not all parts coming from outside?

That conundrum will certainly affect sales prices of "domesticated" BMW (S. Carolina), Mercedes (Alabama) and VW (Tennessee) and may perhaps even affect employment in those plants.

How 'bout the Ford F 150 (Missouri) which, if I'm informed correctly, is assembled completely from parts made in Mexico?

100 percent produced in the U.S.? I'm guessing none.

Trump and his supporters aren't going to understand that, except as a vague confusing notion.

Trump is trying to undo decades worth of manufacturing process and supply chains all through this action, with the big assumption it will compel companies to move their manufacturing here, despite the time it takes to actually make this happen. It will be years for this kind of change to be realized in the manner he's envisioning it, and that's assuming all outcomes work out as intended. I can't help but wonder how much of the industry's calculation is to wait all of this out with the hopes Donnie Boy's gone in another 3 years.

I follow a guy far more informed than I am in these matters who said (and I'm summarizing roughly), "Why would any company expend the resources to adapt in response to such a short-term change? Once Trump is gone, the anticipated unpopularity of these tariffs will likely cause them to disappear. Then what? Keep manufacturing at far higher cost in the United States? What company would do such a thing?"

I vaguely recall (reading about it at the time) how BMW had to massively train US auto-mechanics from the US to adapt to its quality standards.

Whatever came from Motown being total disasters.

That underlined how much of a myth it was that Detroit's downfall was due to imports of foreign cars.

As mentioned elsewhere the big US three are still very much around, they just left Motown in the lurch in favor of better locations and are, by comparison, still producing crap.

In any case, believing that import tariffs are the go to solution of addressing own structural failures is kindergarten economics.

American cars are not immune from these tariffs. Steel and Aluminum come from Canada. Moreover, all cars have foreign content.

Try explaining that idea to the black-white thinking of Trump supporters. They'll get excited and call you a communist instead.

Reality will tell them when they try to buy a new vehicle -- unless tariffs killed their jobs and they can't buy a new car.

They'll buy a super-high-priced used car instead and explain to you calmly how they avoided the tariffs because they're smart, meanwhile snacking on a two-dollar egg.

BBC reported this morning the same. Even American cars will go up $2500 - $15k because of tarrifs on parts
Parts and the steel and aluminum tariffs.

Okay big picture my dear MAGA friends. Trump promised big things like reducing inflation. He proposed specific policies that would do the opposite - create de facto taxes, exacerbate inflation, sink markets, cost working families more. All the experts warned him not to because of these results. He did it anyway. Now all those negative results are happening.

There's not spinning it. He willfully and deliberately ****ed everything up.

But that's okay because, brown people m'right?
