I suspect there's near zero possibility of using any of the existing buildings - it would require either building a new building on the parade ground, or replacing existing structures.

Sir Spends-A-Lot at it again. What a ****ing moron. This was closed decades ago because even then it was crumbling, and supplying the prison was hella expensive since everything had to come over water. Well no one has ever said communists were smart.

If I remember correctly, even water had to come over water, as the island has none. Lesee: rename the Gulf of Mexico, post a pic of himself as Pope, send US convicts to El Salvador, annex Greenland, reclaim the Panama Canal, and now Alcatraz, all recommendations from the “stable genius.” Of course, stables often have helpings of horse shit. But ain’t it great? We don’t have to wait til Thanksgiving. We can hear from the crazy uncle year round.

Read a report years ago that supply cost was one of the reasons to shut the prison down. That was 60 years ago.
Another was maintenance. The structure was starting to have issues due to age and exposure to the ocean environment.

The federal government now has a dozen max security prisons, and due to a drop in crime and aging facilities another five previous ones have been downgraded to medium security - including the infamous Leavenworth.

The feds also have one Supermax in Florence Colorado, housing between 300 and 400 inmates.

If there was a need to upgrade a prison (which there is not) to a max security prison then some fully functioning place like Leavenworth would be a far less expensive option. And obviously, given the small number in supermax it is totally idiotic to create another ... especially stupid in locating it on Alcatraz.

This is the usual brain-dead show boating of Trump, nothing more than a variation of his "military parades" and "foreign film" tariffs. Yet more confirmation that the mad King is truly mad.

That Alcatraz is crumbling is a good thing. Well, for a prison anyways. Besides it shouldn't cost too much the keep the locks tight and the bars strong. Plus, the use of balls and chains should keep the guests resistant to trying to swim away.

They could use the 'guests' as the labor for whatever work was required to revamp its ability to keep them in where they belong. I'm sure the 10 cents an hour they'll be paid will be greatly appreciated.

That it would cost too much to feed them because Alcatraz is an island seems ludicrous on its face. Even more ludicrous when analyzed. It's just a few minutes' boat ride from Fisherman's Wharf, SF, to Alcatraz - just one mile. San Quentin is further than that, and nobody's whining about the cost to send food there.

Of course, there's the one unavoidable reason to oppose re-opening Alcatraz. ORANGE MAN BAD!!!!!
