A report that President Donald Trump is preparing to offer Russian President Vladimir Putin economic incentives to encourage him to end the war in Ukraine—including opening up access to natural resources off Alaska's coast—has sparked anger online. The Daily Telegraph reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is exploring the economic trade-offs the U.S. can make with Russia in order to facilitate a ceasefire and peace agreement. These include giving Putin access to the rare earth minerals in the Ukrainian territories Moscow partially occupies, as well as opportunities to tap into the natural resources in the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia's eastern coast. The Telegraph cited a White House statement that it did not comment "on deliberative conversations that may or may not be happening."

But social media users have responded with anger at the prospect of opening up Alaska's natural resources to Russian interests, including Trump critic and former GOP representative Adam Kinzinger who posted on X: "Let's see republicans defend this." Trump's America First policy has seen him strike mineral deals with Ukraine and Kazakhstan. While the Telegraph report has not been verified and there are few details, the prospect of opening up resources near Alaska to Putin would bolster Russia's strategic interests in the Arctic region. The Telegraph report said he would present Putin with commercial opportunities in occupied Ukrainian territory as well as the Bering Straits, and that Bessent was exploring the economic trade-offs the U.S. could make with Russia—such as lifting American sanctions on Russia's aviation industry—to expedite a peace deal. Thousands of people are expected to gather in Anchorage on Thursday to protest against the arrival of Putin ahead of Friday's summit. Trump told a press conference Wednesday that following the bilateral meeting, there was a chance of a second meeting with Putin that would include Zelensky.

I wasn't aware that Donald Trump owned America's resources. Supplying Russia with rare Earth minerals is not very sound national security policy.

There is no telling how far down the rabbit hole Trump may go in order to acquire a Nobel Peace Prize. After all, Barack Obama has one.

Surely you’re aware that the Executive Branch decides on the extraction of the nation’s natural resources and makes trade agreements.

I'm also aware that Trump appoints sychophantic CEO's to Cabinet positions who are known to exploit our natural resources for profit.

"Free energy!", Vadim explained. "Coolant from warhead storage drives turbine for drill. Radiation helps to assay for minerals."

"I'm not so sure",
Bob replied. "Using a nuclear missile on a drill rig ... wouldn't that work better if it was pointed upside down? Or if it wasn't armed?"

"It's all in treaty!",
Vadim replied. "Your president signed!"

The idea that the president of the United States doesn’t control what America does or doesn’t do with its natural resources seems like a stretch at best.

Maybe Bone Spurs would trade Alaska for Greenland.

His name is not Shirley.

And the Executive Branch can't just give away American resources to an enemy nation.

No one is “giving away” anything.
Then what is the deal? How can Trump force companies to sell raw materials to Putin? Opening up sales to Russia doesn't mean the sales will occur. Unless you're suggesting Trump mandate who the extractors can and can't sell their products to.

McMaster could tell you how far down after Helsinki.

The U.S. engaged in trade with the Soviet Union throughout much of the Cold War, so clearly it can.

Nothing positive will come out of this meeting. How vulgar and self-centered Donald Trump is. Trump is eager to do something with this summit that has nothing to do with Ukraine. Putin wins this round. Russian television will put these images on a loop to show Russians. 'Look how the US President loves our Putin!' This is great for Putin's image back home. As for Trump, this meeting is sucking up everyone's attention rather than being focused on the Epstein files, the falling stock market, inflation and the military takeover of D.C.
