The USDA wants to remove people from food stamps regardless of the change in the employment environment from coronavirus

While U.S. unemployment claims are shattering an all-time record, due to the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump’s administration is continuing its attempts to throw hundreds of thousands off of the government food-stamp program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Earlier this month, U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell ruled that a change sought by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue was unlawful and blocked the agency from enforcing it. According to a report by the AP on Wednesday, Perdue said that the “USDA disagrees with the court’s reasoning and will appeal its decision.”

But Howell’s “reasoning” was spot-on, and Perdue’s insistence with going ahead with an appeal is heartless in the face of a pandemic.

The rule change that the USDA is looking to put in place would halt states’ abilities to waive certain federal work- and time-limit requirements for SNAP recipients. As a result, the change would remove approximately 700,000 people from SNAP rolls starting on April 1st.

Hmm, I had a sneaky feeling that having a president that doesn't posses the key emotion of empathy might not be a great idea.
 
Literally trillions for corporations but Republicans have to go after SNAP benefits, one of the few programs that prevent Americans from literal starvation.

Republicans do not care about the average working American, and before anyone tries to claim otherwise, most people on SNAP assistance have jobs and the limit is 3 months.
 
Another bully tactic aimed at the people who have the least ability to ward off the attack. Really sad when some corporations pay zero in income tax even though they've made billions in profits.
 

Equal protection of the laws for unemployment compensation in our at-will employment States is better. There can be no requirement to work in an at-will employment State except as an punishment for a Crime.
 

This was certainly a problem with the two sociopathic war criminals who preceded the current president - glad to see some belated concern about this issue.

Those 700,000 are likely to be amongst the most disaffected which means that they would likely NOT vote for Mr. Trump in November. Better that those whom God has turned His eye from should perish sooner rather than possibly interfering with God's Plan and the re-election of God's Chosen One.

Unemployment compensation for simply being unemployed at the equivalent to fourteen dollars an hour with or without a fifteen dollar an hour statutory minimum wage can help solve this problem.
 

Wow what a great Christian you are. You should give yourself a pat on the back for being such a fine, upstanding Christian. Let me just clarify what you just said. Those 700,000 are unlikely to vote for Trump in November, so they're dispensable and it's fine to just let them starve to death. Is that the gist of it? Oh, I'm sure you will receive redemption on judgement day, after-all --- you're a model Christian, aren't you?

At the time of this proposal, the country was not heading toward an economic shut down as we are today.
 

While timing may become a challenge and turn into a PR disaster, I personally don't feel the federal government should be funding a $65+ billion subsidy, especially when roughly 20% of it is spent on the wrong types of products (like soft drinks, sugary drinks, candy, chips, processed foods, etc.). This would be a great opportunity to hand the baton over to each state so they can determine the level of governance and funding available.

This is the same rule change that AOC pissed herself over saying ti would have caused her mother and her siblings to go hungry...demonstrating that she, like you, didn't know what the **** SHE was on about either.

Indeed. Because if the states can dictate then liberal states will allow their crippled and dependent pet population to have the unfettered access to the federal programs that have been such a problem in the past. We arent talking about anything unreasonable here...we are talking about expecting able bodied men and women WITHOUT children to work for 20 hours a week. And yes...today is rather unusual but the policy is sound and should be in place.

On the other hand...NOTHING prevents the concerned leftists from starting funds and donating their own money to pay for able bodied men and women to sit at home on their ass and do nothing.

Downtown Chicago is a ghost town,My Uber driver this morning was laid off from his corporate consulting job and is struggling for a few bucks driving those few around that have jobs to still go too. There are no jobs besides delivering burgers and beer for Door Dash. Think before you post your vitriolic nonsense ****ting on those that are in a world of **** right now.
 
This policy wasnt born today, nor should it be stopped today. Its sound policy and our economy wont be in this state forever.
 
Gotta give that food to the rich so they can poop it down on the rest of us.

Dynamics have changed in real time. We're dealing with a pandemic and unprecedented circumstances. Pulling the rug out from under those that desperately need it just because "lazy slackers sitting at home" is cruel and ****ed up regardless if it's a consultant living on the North side of Chicago or an out or work factory worker in middle of nowhere Boone county West Virginia.
 
If there were a mechanism to put this decision off for a few months, that would be swell. But there isnt and I doubt thats what you would like to see. But maybe Im wrong. Are you OK with this policy change being enacted...just suspended til after things get back to normal?
 

What American with any inherent sense of decency and empathy would be "OK" with upsetting the balance of a program/s that is feeding people that desperately need it? If any changes are made they should be helping people acquire more assistance if they need it. Scores of these people are die hard Trump supporters and will remember what he does and his stance come November.
 
You didnt answer the question. The polciy in question calls for able bodied men and women without dependents to work 20 hours in order to qualify for benefits. Do you agree with the policy and just not the timing or do you disagree with the policy altogether?
