President Trump
in an early morning tweet dismissed a New York Times report that he had entertained a proposal from former national security adviser Michael Flynn to declare martial law.

“Martial law = Fake News. Just more knowingly bad reporting!” Trump tweeted Sunday.

The Times reported Saturday that Trump asked during a White House meeting that also involved Flynn’s lawyer Sidney Powell about a recommendation his former aide had made on the conservative Newsmax TV to “rerun” the 2020 election under military supervision.

Using armed troops to overturn election results would likely fall under the following Federal statute:

18 U.S. Code § 2385. Advocating overthrow of Government

  • Whoever knowingly or willfully advocates, abets, advises, or teaches the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying the government of the United States or the government of any State, Territory, District or Possession thereof, or the government of any political subdivision therein, by force or violence, or by the assassination of any officer of any such government; or
Whoever, with intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of any such government, prints, publishes, edits, issues, circulates, sells, distributes, or publicly displays any written or printed matter advocating, advising, or teaching the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying any government in the United States by force or violence, or attempts to do so; or
Whoever organizes or helps or attempts to organize any society, group, or assembly of persons who teach, advocate, or encourage the overthrow or destruction of any such government by force or violence; or becomes or is a member of, or affiliates with, any such society, group, or assembly of persons, knowing the purposes thereof—
Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.
If two or more persons conspire to commit any offense named in this section, each shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.
As used in this section, the terms “organizes” and “organize”, with respect to any society, group, or assembly of persons, include the recruiting of new members, the forming of new units, and the regrouping or expansion of existing clubs, classes, and other units of such society, group, or assembly of person...

  • By definition, using armed troops fits the definition of force.

Interesting. Trump never publicly displays self-awareness. What's going-on?

Breaking the law hasn't seemed to deter Trump in the past, so why should/would it now?
and just how many times has Trump been arrested for anything?

what else, he said it, considered it

he was then advise it would likely wind up putting him in jail so he is denying he ever said it

Nah, there's no danger of 'jail'!

While it seems very likely that Flynn either brought it up or Trump questioned him about it, it's equally as likely that whoever leaked exaggerated or embellished and that the reporting exaggerated or embellished even more.

So I don't think Trump was entirely wrong to call it fake news, depending on whether he meant the topic was never raised (which it probably was) or that the reporting was inaccurate (which it probably was).

Why try to keep a job you’ve already quit? Not that he was ever ready for the job.

Trying to desperately overturn an election to escape what?

It was discussed. Trump is denying the eminence of martial law, not the discussion.

Raise your hands if you believe that he‘s seriously considering martial law.

You don’t have to believe that he’ll officially declare it or would be successful if he did to also know that it’s been on his mind pretty much every day now.

I‘m confused by this post. What about his tweet suggests self awareness, let alone a unique or new self awareness?

Makes no difference; the man is a crook. He was fined millions for theft of charitable donations to his 'foundation', the court ordered it to close down and admonished Trump by saying his behaviour exhibited "a shocking pattern of financial illegality". Then there was his fraudulent 'university' which cost him $25 million in settlements among many, many other crimes. His time will come; Al Capone was only caught for Tax evasion...nobody is too big, or too well connected to avoid the law.

There is a great deal of publicity about how martial law dominated discussion at The White House over the weekend. I am surprised that posters here seem less interested in the topic. If Mark Meadows and Pat Cipollone had to dissuade other staff members from pursuing this as a policy, things are crazier than ever.

I am concerned. I am afraid for our country. I could not sleep very well last night because of this news.

And I don't have the words to express how I feel now that I know a huge fraction of the population, those who support Trump, are okay with Trump using some form of martial law and using violence and the threat of violence to get what they want.

How do you respond to people who would be okay with you being killed for expressing your political views?

He never, ever, backs down on outrageous hyperbolic behaviour. In fact, he usually double-down escalates. Yet for some reason, he came to realize he needed to back-off here. So, I'm suspecting he had some awareness he should not amplify his earlier outrageous consideration of martial law.

I disagree. He has a long history of refuting stories of him considering decisions that end up coming true. Firings of officials are the most common example of this. I’m not saying definitively that he’ll declare martial law; I’m only disagreeing that this is an example of self awareness or lucidity.

This has been pointed out before: he is hanging out with people who have called for this. Its absurd to think its for any other reason than to pursue the idea.

Would you chose to hanging out with Micheal Flynn and Sydney Powell for any other reason? Not likely.
