Washington (CNN)The Trump administration pressured the Department of Homeland Security to release immigrants detained at the southern border into so-called sanctuary cities in part to retaliate against Democrats who oppose President Donald Trump's plans for a border wall, a source familiar with the discussions told CNN on Thursday.

Trump personally pushed Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to follow through on the plan, the source said. Nielsen resisted and the DHS legal team eventually produced an analysis that killed the plan, which was first reported by The Washington Post.

The proposal is another example of Trump's willingness to enact hardline immigration policies to deliver on border security, a key issue for his political base. Thursday's reports come as the President has amplified his rhetoric on illegal immigration in recent weeks, even threatening to close the southern border if Congress and Mexico don't take action.

Trump planned retaliation to sanctuary cities and asked Kristjen Nielson to release immigrants they captured released into sanctuary cities. No doubt this was Stephen Miller's plan and propaganda for the upcoming 2020 election. DHS said 'no, that's illegal'.

"These are human beings, not game pieces," the official said.

I do not understand why this is so upsetting.

Trump refuses illegal immigrants and asylum seekers entry: The monster.

Trump seeks to deport illegal immigrants: the monster.

Trump wishes to detain immigrants and asylum seekers for processing: The monster.

Trump wishes to release immigrants into places where they are specifically being welcomed: The monster.

Should these people be deported? Should they be detained? Should they be released into the interior with no direction?

What should be done and why?

But that was EXACTLY the thing to do. I would think Democrats in those cities would gladly welcome this, wouldn't they?

1. Those awaiting their refugee status hearing in 7 years will be with people who want them.
2. The Democrats of those cities who want them would have them.
3. The cities that don't want them wouldn't have them.
4. They wouldn't be put where they are not wanted.

EVERYONE would win with Trump's plan.

I say good for Trump. I would do the exact same thing. Give the sanctuary states and cities all the illegals whether the state or city wants them or not. Bury em in the illegals. I am curious to how loud they will howl.

It's political RETALIATION, what's so difficult to understand? As one DHS official said, "these are human beings, not game pieces". Kristjen Nielson KNEW it was ILLEGAL and refused to do it, why do you think she was fired??

DHS legal team stopped it according to the article. Not the "left".

But how is it retaliation from the point of view of the state and local governments that are welcoming these people with open arms and believe that the presence of so many immigrants is a cultural and economic boon? Isn't it the most ineffective form of "retaliation" in the world, HumblePi?

It's ILLEGAL for Christ's sake, AGAINST THE LAW. Trump was demanding DHS and Kirstjen Nielson to commit a crime!!

Sounds like the perfect solution. Brilliant even.

The right does not care about the law, it's about owning the dreaded libs.

And? As Nixon once said, fvck the law. Do you really think all of a sudden the right actually cares about the law or the constitution? I don't.

It's almost as if the right is trying to turn america into a dictatorship under trump.

From the Washington Post

"The attempt at political retribution raised alarm within ICE, with a top official responding that it was rife with budgetary and liability concerns, and noting that “there are PR risks as well.” After the White House pressed again in February, ICE’s legal department rejected the idea as inappropriate and rebuffed the administration."

Pelosi’s office blasted the plan.
“The extent of this administration’s cynicism and cruelty cannot be overstated,” said Pelosi spokeswoman Ashley Etienne. “Using human beings — including little children — as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable.”

Even ICE refused to do this! It's good to know that there are still some people who follow the law and have a conscience.

I did not see where it said it was illegal. Perhaps I overlooked it but the article you cited said that DHS officials in question stated that the actions "might" be illegal. But I did not see what U.S. Code Section or case law was cited.

But let us put aside the issue of legality for a moment, because that does not touch on the issue of principle. What, in principle, is wrong with sending illegal immigrants to states and cities the governments of which state that they welcome them with open arms and will shield them from unwarranted persecution?

The motivation is what's wrong. The motivation is purely political retribution, nothing else.

I see. Fair enough. If the motive has to be pure in order for the action to be good, I can understand that. But if the motivation were more pure, and if this same plan were performed under a different President, i.e., send illegal immigrants to states and cities whose governments welcome them until such time they are processed, would you find anything wrong with that?

The next president should retaliate by releasing pedophiles into Alabama. Just to teach Republicans not to vote for Roy Moore types.

Lol, wooooooo.

You’re one of the more “sane” right wingers here. And the fact that you see nothing insane about this story illustrates just how far down the rabbit hole the GOP has fallen.

Damned with faint praise, to be sure, Cardinal. Damned with faint praise.

But let me be clear: I live in California, the quintessential "Sanctuary State." I would be one of those most affected by this scheme. Especially since I already live in a community that has large numbers illegal immigrants living among us. Or perhaps we are simply living among many illegal immigrants. I don't care to ask. So this is not theory to me. This may come as a shock to many here from a conservative Republican, but brown people who speak mostly Spanish do not scare me and I feel little animus towards them since they are mostly very socially conservative and hard working people. A few more decent, hard-working socially conservative people living around me does not scare me. So long as they obey the law and leave me be, I am fine.

While I’m glad that brown people who speak Spanish don’t scare you, this isn’t actually about you.
