The larger economy is likely to have a trade deficit with a smaller country because the smaller country has a smaller consumer base.

What is especially crazy is that there is already real world evidence from Trumps first term when he attacked China with tariffs. China has significantly reduced it's dependence on exporting to the US, and also reduced it's dependence on importing farm produce from the US. The cost of this to the US is very real. I don't actually think Trump was totally wrong to take issue with the China trade, so not trying to place blame for that on him during his first term, but the point is that China showed exactly what will happen when you play the fool with tariffs and seriously upset other countries with needless and pointless insults that are purely designed to feed Trumps massive ego and sooth his personal insecurities. So the damage that Trumps current tariff war and pointless insults are causing now, and will cause in the future, are definitely his responsibility, and the responsibility of the idiots that empowered him. My real fear is that like the lost trade with China, the damage Trump is needlessly causing now will be permanent.

I suspect that large American businesses may weigh in on this...not to Trump, but to Congress as they take their jobs elsewhere...and what is the point to creating industry in America if there are no markets to take advantage because the home market won't be able to maintain the industries?

Fun fact of the day but the UK is actually in the middle of a generational uplift in warship building.
We're building a new bunch of frigates and subs and have massively upgraded shipyards in recent years.

The UK also sold a Frigate design to Canada and Australia in massive arms deal.

We're never going to get back to the days where we ruled the waves but we are spending a butload on new ships at the moment and all are buing built in the UK.

Not half bad at all if you ask me.

The dumb arrogance is allowing the WTO to classify China with the world's second largest economy as a developing nation eligible to apply tariffs to imports but immune to tariffs on exports to developed countries like the US.
