Trump claimed this small boat off the coast of Venezuela was carrying drugs to the U.S......1,000 miles from the U.S.

Are you ****ing kidding me??? This tiny boat was headed 1,000 miles to the U.S.? How the **** would anybody know that??

A reckless, insane, murderous military attack. Trump should now be prosecuted for war crimes, in addition to all his other crimes.

Our media has failed us completely. This was absolutely straight up pre meditated murder. Vance was asked what the governing authority was, his response was they were bringing in drugs. That is not a capital offense requiring military involvement. So now we can add "murderous" to "regime" when discussing Trump's government.

On the one hand (if they were traffickers) I can't say I particularly care about them getting exploded. Morally neutral.

On the other hand, regardless of whether or not they were traffickers bound for the US, this is clearly a geostrategic move against Venezuela and has about as much to do with drugs as weapons of mass destruction had to do with Iraq. My guess would be growing insecurity about BRICs influence in our hemisphere.

Or they just wanted a headline that they murdered drug dealers.

The current regime has postured against Venezuela since his first term. Remember the "caravans" from South America? Yeah, totally self inflicted wound originating from massive oil sanctions on Venezuela, a nation which lives and dies by oil. Milei in Argentina being an obvious US asset in the region isn't a coincidence either. The state department is clearly concerned about Chinese influence in South America.

Is that concern justified? Maybe. We'll probably be a bit more tactical about this regime change because no one is particularly fond about the idea of millions of Venezuelan refugees.

If the boat belongs to a cartel that is a designated FTO, then no, he has all the legal authority he needs.

- That's a huge problem, because it means the President can kind of just declare any sub-state group he thinks is really bad "terrorists" and start using the military against them, but Congress - both Democrats and Republicans - have repeatedly refused to take that power back.

In the meantime, Trump clearly has the mid terms strategy figured out. He's going to convince Democrats to run on "Murder, Carjackings, and Drugs Are Good, Actually"

You say these things like our government isn't headed up by a dementia rattled imbecile that is constantly running for office because governing is too hard. Trump's issues with any given country changes on a daily basis, depending on which Fox News segment he watched. Everything you're saying is projecting on to these people who can't even quote a lawful rational for slaughtering a boat filled with people we don't even know were drug dealers.

....Like the B in it's name, the BRICS are the powerhouse of the future.... and probably always will be.

Do you actually think Trump calls the shots in the state department lmao

Because Venezuela is a totally safe target to bluster about. Aside from maybe over the border in Colombia, it has no real ability to project power. The U.S. can safely strut around and posture without worrying about Caracas suddenly launching an offensive or something

No, he doesn't. We are not at war with cartels, and the regime needs to provide more than VP couch ****er saying "it's legal cause we said so"

You mean Trump has his *base* figured out.

Going to war in Venezuela or Mexico would be an objectively idiotic decision no matter how much one yells about “the cartels”

The Navy had to destroy the boat. It's ridiculous to think the United States Navy could stop and capture a small boat with 11 people aboard. It's absurd.

And if they captured the boat and no drugs were found, Trump wouldn't get to wave his little mushroom around like a big strong hero.

No, he doesn't.

If they were a designated FTO, yes he does.

Correct. It has to be legal because the President said so, as he is the one that Congress has chosen to vest and leave that authority with.

You mean Trump has his *base* figured out.

He has a good bead on them as well, but it looks like he's setting Democrats to run on a pro-crime agenda which will.... probably not work great for them.

I think, mayhaps, they should not take the bait (and it would probably help if they decided to invest in good governance for a change), but, it's hard to stop an American political party from choosing the stupidest of all its options, these days.

It is also worth noting that this is not exactly entirely new. We've had military units working the C-Cartel mission in the Carribbean for years; decades, even.

The boat was likely headed to Trinidad and Tobago, which is a major stop on the supply chain for narcotics. Most likely the US had enough intelligence to warrant the strike. Either way, there are people who know who was in that boat. If it was a mistake and the US Navy killed some innocent fishermen, it will certainly come out upon investigation. If nothing about the victims comes out, then it was probably narco-traffickers.

his popularity will go up

Just an fyi

If, and it is a very big IF with Trump in charge, these were truly drug runners as claimed, then I don't have a real issue with it. However, the chances that the Trump admin is doing this to help Caribbean nations combat drugs is unfortunately pretty small. Obviously a boat that size wasn't heading directly to the US, so if it was truly carrying drugs, Trump has at least inadvertently aided some other nation in dodging a major delivery.

There is almost certainly some nasty ulterior motive behind these Trump actions. Most likely related to Trumps political messaging as others have already noted. That's a shame, because using US muscle to truly help the many small Caribbean nations combat drugs, could be a really positive thing if done properly.

Trump played the tough guy and his supporters had an orgasm.

I don't have a particular issue with using our military capabilities to deal with confirmed drug runners.

Of course, I don't trust the Trump Administration one iota to properly identify who is or isn't a drug runner.
