I've often wondered how many citizens of Iran actually opposed the religious regime. In the case of women, there doesn't seem much of an up-side to extreme Islam. Child brides, various brutal forms of punishment for disobedience or perceived infidelity. Having to walk around in public completely covered which must be stifling in the heat.

They are not kind to the LGBT community either and they have even worse punishments under the regime.

However, there must be reasons that they all put up with this, IMO meaning there are enough "fanatics" that the bulk of the population fears to act.

Recall the Green Movement? There was plenty of popular support. There was also plenty of Basij thugs to suppress it
