He gets away with things no other politician would because the bar is always so much lower: what is rightly pointed out as buffoonish behaviour is instead praised by his base because that's the sort of showmanship they voted for. He's very much untouchable in that respect.

Where the OP gets it right is that Trump is, media aside, so often his own undoing. His manufactured crises tend to backfire spectacularly, resulting in walkbacks and sheepish excuses.
