They more than likely suggested it because of it's origins. Trump has gone "balls out, **** it, the GOP is no longer going to tread lightly hiding their true beliefs" We're racists and make no apologies for it"Trump invokes KKK slogan 'love it or leave it' at North Carolina rally | SBS News
Trump invokes slogan used regularly by local SC KKK division in campaign rally
"At a rally in North Carolina, US President Donald Trump doubled down on his attacks against four Democratic congresswomen and appeared to invoke a slogan used by white nationalists telling them to 'love it or leave it'."
“If they don’t love it, tell them to leave it" - that was US President Donald Trump’s message about four Democratic congresswomen at a rally in North Carolina, where supporters called for one of four female politicians - who was born overseas - to be “sent back”.
“Let ’em leave,” Mr Trump said of the four women. “They’re always telling us how to run it, how to do this, how to do that. You know what? If they don’t love it, tell ’em to leave it.”

I find it hard to believe that his handlers weren't aware of this reference in this specific area of the country—especially in regards to the topic at hand.
The question is, what level of racial rhetoric does Trump have to use before his supporters find it abhorrent enough to call him out on it? My guess is there is no bottom, no mark to hit on that.

Why should they leave it? I thought he wanted them to fix it.

It was used during the Vietnam War. Was it racist then too? And where is the evidence that this slogan was invented by the KKK?
There's going to be serious violence, maybe even people being killed by these deplorables.
Not Trump's supporters, nor the cowards in the GOP will care, but it's going to happen.. His ramping up the rhetoric and racism is daily now. He's going to trigger someone out there.. The daily rhetoric? These hate filled rallies? Nothing but violence will come from this.
If the Democrats keep chasing the laser light Trump keeps moving around on the floor, he's going to create enough chaos where they will waste time continually reacting to his nonsense. This is the equivalent of getting into a shouting match with a child; you end up reduced to throwing another tantrum and what caused the tantrum doesn't get addressed. From a media perspective he's winning this unfortunately; that is of course his strength so continuing to feed it adds to the chaos. It's the old "squeakiest wheel gets the grease" strategy.
I'm not saying his idiocy shouldn't be addressed, but I think a few concise statements from party leadership chastising his out of line comments should do it. By continually harping about Trump's racism is a distraction opponents can't get mired in for too long lest they look like loons chasing their own shadows, and Trump ends up looking like the saner choice.
Apparently in order to prove that they're worthy of fixing it these four women have to go to the countries where their ancestors were citizens, and fix those countries.
Other people don't have to go anywhere else to prove their competence. Trump doesn't have to prove his competence, not even in America. But these four women have to go fix the countries of their ancestors before they're entitled to attempt to do the jobs their constituents voted for them to do.

Trump was wearing a WHITE shirt at the rally.
Coincidence?
I think not!

It's pandering to racists. Nothing more.
He's catering to his base for sure, but he's also throwing a cherry bomb in the toilet for the media. He knows they're going to eat the conflict up and run with it. I've never underestimated his media savvy because he understands that conflict drives ratings.
The slogan was used by the local KKK on a regular basis, yes?
Deflection doesn't change this fact; unless you believe Trump truly is that stupid not to research this before jumping on the slogan, there really is no excuse for this and everyone knows it.
It was a conservative slogan of the 60s - I've never heard it tied to the KKK.
Your premise is ridiculous to put it kindly, but Trump is LITERALLY Hitler, so I'll concede that.
Obviously, today the racists are picking-up on this slogan and adopting it as theirs.Trump invokes KKK slogan 'love it or leave it' at North Carolina rally | SBS News
