Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from new tariffs

Incorrect. I never said anything about Trump making a "deal" with Nvidia.

First, in a discussion about Apple, I said that APPLE ITSELF would likely be negotiating with Trump to try and get in his good graces.

Then, I said that, because he's a narcissist, there's no way Trump would grant exemptions to the tariffs without getting something out of it that he could declare as some kind of victory.

Go back and look for yourself. My quotes are right there in plain sight.

I still firmly believe that as a narcissist, Trump wouldn't grant exemptions for the tariffs without having some personally-adventitious reason for doing so. Most likely, Nvidia had contingency plans in place several months ago in the event that Trump won and implemented his often-touted plans to issue tariffs that would directly impact their bottom line.

Once the tariffs were initiated, Nvidia likely reached out to Trump and informed him of their already-in-action plans, thus using it to their advantage to negotiate a reprieve.

Not really. For a company like Nvidia who does a great deal of manufacturing out of China, they were well aware of Trump's plans for a massive blanket tariff on China. It wouldn't be rocket science for them (not that they aren't capable of comprehending rocket science) to come up with multiple contingencies depending on the plans implemented.

It's interesting that you seem to think that companies don't make multiple sets of plans covering various possibilities. If they were an "eggs all in one basket" outfit, they wouldn't stay in business very long. This is Business 101.

No, I don't realize that because nobody other than you has made this claim.

Nvidia made a surprise announcement TODAY, 48 hours after they were exempted from tariffs on China directly impacting their bottom line, and you jump right to the conclusion that they made this decision primarily because of legislation that was passed over 2 1/2 years ago, without any evidence whatsoever?

Also, proclaiming the CHIPS Act to be the reason defies other things we do know. Namely, this investment is to build supercomputers in the US, without a primary focus on semiconductors, which is what the CHIPS Act is related to. And while Nvidia is also going to build some AI chips in their US facilities, they're doing so in partnership with two Taiwanese chipmakers (FoxConn and Taiwan Semiconductors), so they will undoubtedly be building some chips overseas as well. Also notable is that the chips being constructed are advanced AI chips, which weren't on the radar when the CHIPS Act passed. So while it's undoubtedly true that the CHIPS Act benefits a portion of their plans, there is no indication whatsoever that the it's what brought their plans into fruition. Especially not related to building supercomputers.

In general, it takes at least that long to find land to build manufacturing facilities, hire staff, and get operations up and running. Retrofitting existing facilities takes a fair amount of time also.
 
Trump is the bat-s**t crazy guy who slaps himself on the right cheek and says tariffs will save the economy from itself...then slaps himself on the left cheek and says tariffs will ruin the economy. In the not to distant future the APA is come out with a new DSM with Trumphoria listed as a new mental illness.

How much sooner? How soon should it take investors and/or board rooms to agree on an expensive, always risky plan? How long do the architectural plans for it take? How long does finding a suitable location take? Then how long does the required permits and studies take? How long before the first shovel hits the dirt?

About three to five years, I've read.
