Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from new tariffs

Apple hardly uses "flea market trash." That's why Consumer Reports rates them so highly and they have the loyalest customer base.


Why is Apple manufacturing in China? China has an extensive supply chain. You need a thousand rubber gaskets? That’s the factory next door. You need a million screws? That factory is a block away. You need that screw made a little bit differently? It will take three hours.

The point is that manufacturing plants don’t exist in isolation; they benefit a lot from being part of a manufacturing cluster, with specialized suppliers and a large pool of workers with the right skills close at hand.

If Apple wants to evade the tariffs on China, they can ship everything assembles, except for one screw, to Vietnam where that last screw is inserted and ship the finished product to the U.S. tariff free.

I think some of what we're seeing is due to Biden's CHIPS Act and to stay in tRump's good graces, companies will make sure he gets and takes credit for what was probably already planned.

You think these plans were made overnight in an agreement with Trump? Really? Why do you think this? The article mentioned nothing about Trump.
 
 
You do realize we can thank the Chips Act for that, correct? For those not up on such things, the Chips Act was a bi-partisan piece of legislation backed by the Biden administration designed to bring the semi-conductor industry back to the US and reduce our dependency on China and Taiway. It is actually the right way to accomplish economic goals, not capricious tariffs.

A restaurantur has no problem poisoning his customers with gutter oil. A builder has no problem with people dying in a collapse. And the battery manufacturer has no problem with a ebike rider becoming the human torch in China. They care even less about you.

The CHIPS Act was signed into law 2 1/2 years ago. If it was a response to that, it would've happened much sooner.

Information about Trump's plans and policies didn't start on January 20, 2025. Corporations like Nvidia are well-run and they knew what was coming if Trump won the election well before Election Day. Most likely, they had plans in place for either outcome, and when it was clear that Trump had won, they put those contingencies into action, knowing full well that Trump was planning tariffs that would greatly impact their bottom line.
