Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday or he’ll move on

By Mike DeBonis and Juliet Eilperin
March 23, 2017

President Trump delivered an ultimatum to House Republicans on Thursday night: Vote to approve the measure to overhaul the nation’s health-care system on the House floor Friday, or reject it and the president will move on to his other legislative priorities. The president, through his aides in a closed-door meeting, signaled that the time for negotiations was over with rank-and-file Republicans who were meeting late at night on Capitol Hill to try to find common ground on the embattled package crafted by House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.). Democrats relished the GOP’s predicament. Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, who had scheduled a 4 p.m. rally against the bill, turned it into a short-term declaration of victory.

Former president Barack Obama, for his part, issued a statement noting that more than 20 million Americans have gained coverage since he signed the law in 2010, while the rise in health-care costs has slowed. The statement came on the seventh anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act — a day that Republicans had hoped to mark by dismantling it. “So the reality is clear: America is stronger because of the Affordable Care Act,” Obama said, adding that Republicans are welcome to work with Democrats to improve the law. “But we should start from the baseline that any changes will make our health-care system better, not worse, for hard-working Americans. That should always be our priority.”The move was a high-risk gamble for the president and the speaker, who have invested significant political capital in passing legislation that would replace the 2010 Affordable Care Act. For Trump, who campaigned as a skilled negotiator capable of forging a good deal on behalf of Americans, it could either vindicate or undercut one of his signature claims. If the measure fails, it would be a defeat for Trump in his first effort to help pass major legislation and it may also jeopardize other items on his wish list, including a tax overhaul and infrastructure spending.
Do all of America a huge favor and ... move on and away from the terrible AHCA legislation.

Ah the compassionate, Christian conservatives are a humane, wonderful bunch. (sarcasm)

eliminating the law’s “essential benefits” that insurers must offer under the ACA in an effort to reduce premium costs. Those benefits include covering mental-health treatment, wellness visits, and maternity and newborn care, and states would have the option of adding them back next year.

They won't help the people, but they will happily help the billion $ insurance companies instead. Again, what a wonder bunch.

Oh, an ultimatum! He's such a toughie, isn't he? So much for being the great dealmaker.

It's time for the GOP to get back to the drawing board. This "bill" they spent the last 7 years claiming they were working on turned out to be garbage. It screws old people, screws poor people, and does absolutely nothing to reduce healthcare and/or insurance costs for any of us.

Good move. The President is showing his negotiating skills. There comes a time when all the bickering and mudslinging needs to be brought to a stop, and a decision be made.

People naïve to hard negotiation will think otherwise.

If the reform doesn't pass, the growing failure of Obamacare will remain in the lap of the Democratic Party, where it was created. The effort to blame to the GOP for it will be quite entertaining, and revealing to all voters.

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

from todays NY Times

A Quinnipiac University national poll found that voters disapproved of the Republican plan by lopsided margins, with 56 percent opposed, 17 percent supportive and 26 percent undecided. The measure did not even draw support among a majority of Republicans; 41 percent approved, while 24 percent were opposed.

The American people are NOT behind this effort.

Earlier in the week FOXNEWS presented their own poll of the issues that Trump voters wanted to see carried out and the top two were 1- jobs and 20 destroy Isis. Getting rid and replacing Obamacare was only the top priority of 10% of Republican voters.

This may explain why Trump said its now or never and it it fails he moves on to something else. That and the fact he has the attention span of a bored three year old.

If Obamacare is not repealed as promised, that can only be blamed on the GOP.

If Obamacare is not repealed as promised, that can only be blamed on the GOP.

It can also be blamed on Obamacare being much better for the people than the lies republicans have thrown out for years

We still live in some form of quasi-democracy, after all

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

I'm surprised his ultimatum wasn't "Vote for it or i'll sit behind my desk/golf club and do nothing the next 4 years except veto everything"

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

Well sure. No question. The GOP promised a new health care program. If they fail to deliver right now, they have not met that obligation to the voters. Doesn't mean they will give up on ever trying to put a replacement in place. It just means they didn't get it done now.

Last time I checked, legislation doesn't have a "double jeopardy" concept built in to it.

But let there be no mistake in understanding, when Obamacare fails, it is purely in the house of the Democratic Party.

Perhaps the magnitude of this hasn't sunken in for you. This has been the unifying principle and the policy priority (at least publicly) of the GOP for the past 8 years. You people attribute every electoral victory you've had since 2010 to it--I know, because you guys bring it up constantly.

Now you're going to spend two weeks on it, fail, and walk away forever? Good luck with that!

Walk away forever? I haven't seen anything that suggests anyone plans to walk away from the issue forever.

If the vote isn't there yet, then there comes a time to fish, or cut bait.

Why drag the process on and on, allowing the frauds in the media to spin their lies and distortions?

If it doesn't pass now, it doesn't mean something won't pass in the future.

Frankly, there may be something to letting the left's signature legislation of the last 8 years crumble into it's predicted heap. Politically, that is quite compelling, although morally, not so good.

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

Since 2010, Republican politicians have told us they WILL get rid of Obamacare. Since then, they've passed various forms of legislation...even though they knew it was for nothing since they didn't have a majority. Well, NOW they have their majority. NOW, we get to see just how serious they were all along. I think Trump believed their rhetoric. I think he honestly thought those Republicans would dump Obamacare immediately. I think he's now pretty much disgusted with the BS rhetoric some of those Republicans are spouting.

But I think there is more to it than that. I think certain Republicans were never serious about dumping Obamacare and now that it could happen, they are scrambling to find idiotic ways to justify their opposition. I also think Trump is at the point where he'll just let those Republicans hang themselves.

btw, I urge everyone to avoid everything their hear from the Mainstream Media. It's not to be trusted or considered...even if they give direct quotes. The politicians who don't dare repeal Obamacare will feed the media a line of BS and the media...always seeking to find ways to make Trump look bad...will eagerly soak it in and spray it at the public. If you don't want to get that bull **** all over you...cover up.

If only Trump had come forward with his own wonderful plan, the way he said he would, rather than reflexively signing onto this piece of crap AHCA, eh?

Nobody can say Trump hasn't tried...not with all the work he's put into it. If CONGRESS doesn't pass a repeal of Obamacare, THAT'S who the people should look at...and maybe think about getting rid of.

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

If only Trump had come forward with his own wonderful plan, the way he said he would, rather than reflexively signing onto this piece of crap AHCA, eh?

It was smart of him.

If he had proposed his own plan, those politicians who always had no intention of dumping Obamacare would have had an easier time opposing him. It wouldn't matter one bit WHAT he had in his plan.

But this way, it's ALL on Congress. Ryan...with some help from the Trump administration...created the legislation. Ryan...along with Trump's support...is pushing it. If Ryan cannot control his Party enough to push it through, it is HIS failure. Not Trump's.

I can't really disagree that a failure on this will underscore Trump's irrelevance.

Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday or he’ll move on

Do all of America a huge favor and ... move on and away from the terrible AHCA legislation.

Obamacare is dying and everyone knows it! We could not keep our doctor, We did not save $25000, We could not keep our healthcare policy if we wanted it. Obamacare cost are up on average 25% but in Arizona they went up over 100%. Policies deductibles are so high people can not use the insurance. Hundreds of counties across the nation have one insurer to choose. Many of the co-opts set up by the Obama administration have failed.

And this:

"Aetna chief executive Mark Bertolini said Wednesday that the Affordable Care Act's exchanges — the marketplaces where consumers can buy individual health coverage under President Barack Obama's signature health-care law — are in a “death spiral.”

Agreed. It won't be President Trumps fault. That is why, IMO, this hard line approach he has taken is a good move.

I've sat around conference tables negotiating deals, and the squabbles and noise can get out of hand. There comes a time to raise a hand and put a stop to it. Deal, or no deal. Make the decision, or move on till some point in the future, if it's worth the effort. It will be worth the effort.

What will be interesting is to see the explosion on the left, and through their MSM partners, should the current deal fail to pass. It will all ignore why the effort was required in the first place.

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

Trump and House leadership now saying that the Freedom Caucus should vote for the AHCA because it defunds Planned Parenthood.

I'm sorry, but why is that a selling point? Aren't the stakes a bit higher than Planned Parenthood?

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

This has nothing to do with any irrelevance...but everything to do with Trump's ongoing battle against the establishment members of his own party. The #NeverTrumpers.

It should be fairly obvious to all that what Trump wants more than anything else is the ability to jump up and down later today and say I WON I WON I WON. He wants to brag about what a great negotiator he is and how he made a great deal.

That is his highest priority.

So if he has to move the bill to the far right to please the Freedom Caucus - that is what will happen. And doing that makes the House bill then DOA in the Senate - but that is not his concern.

This is NOT a health care bill. It is primarily a tax cut bill for the rich.

LOL!!

Not avoiding responsibility or accountability...rather placing it where it belongs. Believe me...Trump will gladly sign an Obamacare repeal if Congress will only send one to him.
