Pence, McConnell head toward House chamber for speech

8:36 p.m.

Vice President Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) are leading senators over to the House chamber for Trump's speech.

Senators lined up on the Senate floor before departing together as a group.

Several senators were spotted walking over to the speech with a senator from the other party, including Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and John Kennedy (R-La.) as well as Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.).

We just had the "Mister Speaker, the President of the United States" announced. Should be starting in earnest any moment now.

Moderator's Warning:
This is a thread for discussing the State of the Union during the actual address. While a little bit of natural verging off onto the topics that are brought up is expected, lets keep the threads focus on the actual speech and the things said rather than Trump's presidency at large / his supporters / Hillary Clinton / in depth discussions of various political issues / Elvis Presley / etc.

All this clapping at intro is great theater.

Re: Trump delivers his first State of the Union [W:1]

Thirty seconds in and he’s still on the TelePrompTer.

Wonder when his interest will fade and he’ll go off script? Five minutes?

From a viewer perspective, it's always bugged me. It just makes it so choppy, so long, and so hard to actually allow people to fully engage in it. It also kind of explains why this wasn't originally meant to be some big event that everyone watches and engages in.

That said, the political science wonk in me does kind of appreciate us still having this kind of strange, archaic, ritualized aspect to part of our governance that...by and large...despite all the partisanship divide, still is largely adhered to in a standard and concise fashion year by year, regardless of who's in power.

However, it definitely makes it obnoxious to watch and follow as a viewer imho.

Well, according to that book of absolutely true facts, "Fire and Fury", Trump should get bored and walk out in about 20 minutes

Starting by honoring America's heros...the Anti Victims....great idea.

$5 bucks he says America at least once.

I will say, I'm extremely happy to see Steve Scalise in there and looking healthy. Being in the DC area, at least within the beltway and with the actual politicians here, it was a great showing that despite all the partisan divide and issues people have...there's still humanity there amongst our elected officials. Not a lot of the stories or coverage made it out nationally I think that I was hearing on the radio and such the day of, but there was significant concern and care from people all around the aisle.

According to Stormy that's 15 minutes longer than he lasts between the sheets. Sorry, Stormy on the mind, Pres porks porn star. It does not get much swampier than that, explains Melanias Wellington boots. Even she knows her old man is full BS.

Re: Trump delivers his first State of the Union [W:1]

Remember when we had a bunch of people gunned down by a nut and instead of doing anything about it we offered ‘thoughts and prayers’?

That was great.

Re: Trump delivers his first State of the Union [W:1]

These speeches are always cringe worthy regardless of the president. Just an excuse for one party to clap like seals for an hour

Yank, only warning your'e going to get. Stormy and Trumps sex life has zero to do with the state of the union or anything talked about in it yet. I suggest you relook at the warning at post one. Another attempted derail into off topic scandal issues and you'll no longer be participating

Daring the D's to refuse to stand for the success of people of color....GENIUS

Re: Trump delivers his first State of the Union [W:1]

The president announces black unemployment is at it's lowest and history and the black Dems sit on their butts refusing to clap or stand...

Scalise is looking more robust as times goes on. There is indeed a lot of humanity that goes on behind the partisan veneer.

That was a moment people WILL be talking about. Why on earth didn't they cheer for that?

Yeah. Pretty uppity.

They should act grateful.

Couldnt agree more ive said this many times about these speeches no matter who was president. its really stupid and makes the thing seem so childish and yes, like you said obnoxious.
