Trump cannot allow The Canadians to win this deal. He made a promise to dairy farmers in Wisconsin that he had their back. Wisconsin is a big reason why Trump is president.

For Trump removing this 300% tariff the Canadians impose on U.S Milk is a must.

I want to know which Canadian leaked the Trump interview to the Toronto Star. That is complete Bs.

If we can sell milk powder to Québec without tariffs that would be a big boost.

Trump has more to lose than Trudreau so don't expect the U.s to cave!!!

Canadians dairy cartel was already found to be in violation by the wto panel. They are complete thugs!

Is the US going to stop subsidizing its dairy sector or is ''fair trade'' the US trying to bully Canada into a one sided deal, where Canada has to give up everything and the US gives up nothing? Also is Canada the reason Wisconsin dairy is suffering or is it due to over production of dairy products in Wisconsin?

I wish some Trump supporters would be honest, fair trade is lie and what they really want is mercantilism.

The WTO sided with Canada in regards to US lumber tariffs 4 times already. Do you support dropping those any time soon?

Yeah, he's such a great friend to Wisconsin dairy farmers.

Wisconsin sells a lot of milk to Canada. Most has very small tariffs on it. The 250% tariff is on milk which exceeds the quota and it's there to stop Canada's market from being flooded and their farmers being put out of business.

Yes, they protect their farmers and we protect our farmers.

Well, we DID protect our farmers.

Trump is hammering farmers. Even his scheme to use our taxes to buy back votes from farmers after he screwed them over with tariffs benefits mostly soybean farmers, not dairy.

Yeah, great friend to Wisconsin dairy farmers. With friends like that who needs enemies.

Dairy accounts for 0.2% of the trade btween the countries and America is willing to torpedo an international negotiation for the sake of placating some citizens of one state?
America threatens Canada with tariffs if Canada doesn't sign a deal that was agreed to without them at the table, but there was a deal in place when America put tariffs on steel and aluminum. Canada could have an ironclad deal with America and still the tariffs could happen, so what kind of threat is that?
America says they won't give anything in the talks- that's not negotiating, that's dictating.
America says the deadline is Friday, but when that deadline comes and goes the talks will continue next week.
Bottom line- you can't believe anything you hear from America, so how in hell can you make a deal with them?

You need you wake up and stop being a pawn for the canadian dairy cartel.

It costs on average $500 as a tax on canadian citizens to keep this cartel running.

Supply management is an outdated system that should be illegal. It goes against the idea of a free trade society.

No other country has a supply management system.

Suuply management costs the average canadian family with children $600 as a tax. I am so sick and tired of weak Canadian leaders. If they had a pm with balls, Canada as a whole wouldn't be beholden to a dairy cartel.

Fair is fair, if Canada gets rid of its supply management system, the US should get rid its dairy subsides and stop putting tariffs our lumber

I m not married to the current the dairy system, but I would not give away anything for free. You want us to get rid of our dairy system, give us something in return, you insist Trump is a great deal maker, but you insist on all sticks, no carrot approach to trade, that makes things way harder then they have to be.

What does that have to do with Trump lying about us having a trade deficit with Canada and using the .2% that dairy makes up of our trade with Canada to justify a devastating trade war, with no apparent end game, and no foreseeable gains sufficient to justify the damage he is doing to the relationship with our closest ally.

Being a friend to Wisconsin dairy farmers is not the answer to that riddle, because friends don't do each other like Trump has done Wisconsin.

The deal was done but someone in the white house leaked the bloomberg interview.

Is the leak true, was Trump disrespecting Canada and say the US should not compromise on anything? That sounds like a bad deal for Canada then.

Seems like American conservatives think Americans are only people on the planet allowed to be patriotic and everyone else should serve US interests over their own country's interests.

Oh look Trump made his hand weak with his big mouth again. So when fails with Canada will you think its his fault or come up with some excuse?

I'm fair, at least I try to be. I'm not opposed to Canada to protecting their dairy industry. Negotiations are a give and take process. They get dairy we get something of equal value in return. That's my idea of fair

Not so sure a milk deal will help Trump in WI.

Lot of buyer's remorse and regret in these parts. I think Wisconsinites, although we meant well, have learned our lesson. Not sure any of the GOP will fare well here but you never know. I think Walker might pull it off. But not sure about any of the rest.

Trump just set his own personal all time high of a 60% disapproval rating. Wisconsin seems to be in line with mainstream America. Time to throw the bum out.

Do you have a link. First time I heard your claim but if it's true I certainly understand Canada not wanting their market flooded by anyone's exports including ours

Listen if Canada wants to impose a tariff go ahead. But what they do is dump cheap milk to other countries causing prices to fluctuate.

U do realize canada floods the market with their excess milk.... right?

Look, I think Canada would eventually be willing to change its dairy system, but not for nothing, Trump keeps saying Trudeau is weak, but he will truly seem weak to the Canadian public if he caves into Trump, giving up stuff and getting nothing in return, the public may start to despise him and he won't get reelected, Trump is putting him in place where he can't say yes to a deal, if Trump insists on not compromising and disrespecting Canada. You can talk about internal politics of the US, but realize other countries have their own internal politics.

If Trump wants Canada to get rid its current dairy system, the US should either stop its dairy subsides or ditch their lumber tariffs, though it seems like Trump insists on a strategy of all sticks and no carrots.

Which is funny because back in Trump's inaugural address he said this:

....

We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world – but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first.

We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example for everyone to follow.

We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones – and unite the civilized world against Radical Islamic Terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth.

....

Now if another country says they're going to put their interests first, it's considered an insult to the U.S. and is an excuse to levy even more tariffs. You know ... those alleged "national security" tariffs ... but really Trump's ego-salving tariffs.

U do realize canada floods the market with their excess milk.... right?

You're making crap up. Canada doesn't produce excess dairy- thats the whole point. You know how China floods the US market with cheap, subsidized, over-produced inferior steel? Thats what the US dairy industry wants to do to Canada, flood the market with subsidized inferior products from factory operations that feed cattle growth hormones that are banned in Canada and Europe to make them produce more milk.

[U.S. President] must hold the line against Canada is something that one wouldn't necessarily expect to hear or read. :lamo

Yeah. Some people are still holding on and reciting the mantra that Trump is doing this for the good of the nation and they're willing to sacrifice. But how much more can even the most stalwart take before they say enough is enough?

How Canada's Sacred Cows and 270% Tariffs Set Trump Off at G-7

^^ I just read that, but now it's saying the link is not working. At least not for me.

Here's a quote from a cached copy.

Does Canada really charge 270% on milk?

On some dairy imports, yes. Canada essentially allows two avenues for dairy imports -- those within quota, and surplus stuff. It’s the latter where tariffs spike, because Canada’s whole system is built to avoid a surplus -- hence its name, “supply management.”

Take milk, for instance. Within quota, the tariff is 7.5 percent. Over-quota milk faces a 241 percent tariff. Other over-quota rates include blended dairy powder at 270 percent. Duties rise to as high as 314 percent for other products, according to data from the World Trade Organization. Canadian officials argue that all countries subsidize dairy, including the U.S. -- Canada essentially does so indirectly by closing its borders and capping production. If you’ve got a slice of the quota, though, the tariffs don’t apply. And Canada has given up slices of its market in trade talks. (Including in the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal that Trump quit.)
