Lawrence O'Donnell drew my attention to Donald Trump's confusion about when the Declaration of Independence was written (i.e. in the colonial era or round about the time of the Civil War). I knew he was ignorant, but this was mind boggling.

"Asked in the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon if he’s made a decision about what, if anything, he will do regarding Iran, the President told reporters, 'I have ideas as to what to do, but I haven’t made a final.

I like to make the final decisions one second before it’s due, you know, ’cause things change. I mean, especially with war, things change with war, it can go from one extreme to the other.

War’s very bad. There was no reason for this to be a war,” he said, apparently about Israel and Iran.

“There was no reason for Russia, Ukraine. A lot of wars, there was no reason for.”

“You look right up there,” Trump said, pointing to the wall, “I don’t know, you see the Declaration of Independence, and I say, I wonder if you, you know, the Civil War always seemed to me maybe that could have been solved without losing 600,000 plus people.”

Donald Trump is a moron.

The worst kind in that he's convinced himself hes very bright.

But pretty much every time he opens his mouth he reveals deep, deep ignorance.

"War's very bad." Is the phraseology of a 4 year old.

I am convinced he's functionally illiterate and likely the stupidest president in history.

I would actually be surprised if Trump DIDN'T confuse the Revolutionary War with the Civil War. Every other story is about how he knows nothing about our country's history, nor does he care.

Well Trump once claimed in a 4th of July speech that during the Revolutionary War in 1775 the army took over the airports.
So maybe the Declaration of Independence was written while traveling on a plane?

There's no other country in the world, in the developed world anyway, that the proud, determined ignorance Trump represents could be elected to President. It's mind-boggling.
Is it the triumph of American populism? Ignorant Americans seeing one of their own and gathering the clan? It's incomprehensible to me that Trump could get the support of so many people in a supposedly literate society.

What is astonishing is that his stupidity is so blatant and no one gives a shit.

So Americans are stupid. Got it.

Now please find another nation to run to when shit goes down.

Canada has enough Yanks

MAGA can likely read, but it has turned its back on common sense, decency, fair play, critical thinking skills, and the instinct of self-preservation.

To use a term I disllike: MAGA has deliberately "dumbed itself down".

I have a lifelong friend from college who lives in Winnipeg and I have visited him and his family several times.
As Trump continues to run this country into the ground moving to Winnipeg gets more and more appealing.

D'accord.
This century is ours. They can watch from a distance.

The first person to say that, about this is Canada's century was Rene Levesque!

Trudeau, the real one, also hinted at such a concept throughout his reign. Jean Chretien was famous for saying "Our time has yet to come....."

I date myself but they were contemporaries.

I recall Trump warning us that Biden might start World War Two dealing with the Russia–Ukraine War.

(30 seconds)

Now that he's in the White House, responsibility for nuclear escalation apparently no longer falls on the President.

He didn't confuse the wars. It's the way his brain misfires.

I agree. I copied the headline used by the posting website, as is customary, when I started the thread. I had not interpreted his statement as evidence that he had confused the wars, either, however. It sounded as if he didn't know when The Declaration of Independence was written or its significance and probably didn't have much of an idea what caused The Civil War. He certainly he no idea of the different eras in which each took place.
