Trump administration intervenes to help block law requiring priests to report child abuse revealed in confessions

What about wife-beating? Should priests be required to report when a parishioner confesses to wife-beating?

If a law required you to do something you consider morally repugnant and against your religion, would you obey it?

Yes, IMO all crimes, just like mental health professionals, teachers, LE.

What you described was consequences they would face...ignoring the consequences to those abused. I most certainly would not ignore the consequences of those being harmed. Btw, I wouldnt follow a God that demanded I did.

Well, like I said, if priests start reporting crimes confessed to in the confessional crimes will just stop being confessed to, not stop being committed, so nobody will be protected.
Just seems like one of those empty, "be-seen-to-do-something" gestures.

I considered adding them.

As I wrote also, same for the examples I gave. However, maybe it will actually release some clergy to do "what they believe is right."

Maybe I missed it, however I did not see anything in the article suggesting that Trump personally intervened.
His administration did. Pam Bondi has made it clear she works for Trump, not America.

To be fair this is a blatant violation of religious freedom. People are supposed to be able to confess to their priest anything and that includes crimes. We don't know the circumstances and the reasons a minor may want to leave their confession with a priest. But it's not the right of the government to force priests into telling these conversations which are supposed to remain private.

Oh, dear. Sharia law doesn't seem to get this same freedom.

Bondi runs the Justice Dept and does not check in with Trump every day on every issue. The article shows no Trump intervention on the issue regarding confession privacy,

According to Islam, a father is "supposed to be able" to kill his daughter if she runs away and refuses an arranged marriage. It's an honor killing Do we allow that?

It's actually a case in court here in Seattle right now. We've got the father on video choking and beating her...and people saying they saw the mother do the same. And I havent heard any hesitations over charging them re: religious reasons (altho they are discussing that as the motivation.)

Have you seen any of their staff meetings? She verbally blows him and literally applauds almost everything he says. They've shown video of him discussing his ideas and "accomplishments" (in his mind).

That is in regard to top law enforcement issues like enforcing our borders, dealing with fentanyl coming across our southern borders, and weeding out the deep state, you know, issues that come up in cabinet meetings? Privacy with a priest in a confession, good or bad is between her and the judicial system. If you have any evidence of Trump intervening, bring it on, otherwise it is just more Trump hating speculation.

You're spiraling and speculating. You have no idea but based on her demonstrated sycophantism and obedience...I'm going with: she did not act on her own.

Argue away...you dont know but at least I've seen her in action, fawning and literally applauding "basic" ideas he (believed he) was coming up with. Hegseth, Rubio, all followed suit of course. It was nauseating to realize such simps are in charge of our nation.

You're spiraling and speculating.
You are the one speculating or simply assuming what you want to think. And the reality is that the privacy issue regarding confessions to Catholic priest is up to the judicial branch, not Trump or Bondi. All she can do is enforce whatever the present law is. Nothing for Trump to intervene in.

Certainly not with objective eyes. If she had that post under President Autopen, you would be lavishly heaping praise on her.

All Trump has to do is to think about it, then it is so. It's what Trumph did so openly in the classified documents case, remember? He even did his powers of mental telepathy to the MAGA Judge Cannon to dismiss the case entirely. God's Will Be Done, Amen.

While I feel this behavior abhorrent by the church, as the Church is not part of the Government (separation of church and state), then the opposite is true. The Government shouldn't and can't interfere with religious affairs.

Why hasn't the CHURCH dealt with this as is their purview?

Not sure how to feel about this, but I will always lean towards protecting victims and not the perpetrators.

But I get why the Catholic Church is fighting this.

However, Trump should not be involved. At all. No administration should, but least of all this one.

So what do you think, should protection of abusers be allowed in this instance as a "freedom of religion" idea?

I'll stand behind the Seal of the Confessional.

This is a very singular unique thing, similar to attorney-client privilege.

Attorneys have this privilege, and I have no problem with Priests enjoying it.

Trump loves pedophiles and sexual predators.

Right wing Christians want to ban the hijab but this is cool

The Catholic Church, backed by our DOJ, argues that the new law violates their constitutional (1A) rights, holding themselves above mental healthcare professionals where it comes to protecting victims by getting a free pass from required reporting of admissions of abusing children because their religious law is above our Constitution. Even going so far as to say that if a priest reports child abuse admitted to during confession, that action would cause the priest’s soul to be damned to hell for eternity.

WTF?!?

If there was an afterlife, those that aid child abusers by keeping their confidence should spend eternity buried upside down in shit.

I believe that anyone who is in a position to report suspected child abuse should be obligated by law to do so. If protecting the confessional means a child will likely continue to be abused, I'll side with protecting the child EVERY TIME.

I'll add this, though it probably won't allay your concerns:

A Priest is not obligated to Absolve. If he were to believe an ongoing sin (abuse) is occurring, Absolution would require the sinful activity to cease. It could also require the Confessor make amends, including reporting their deeds to the authorities.

If the Confessor's Penance (sentence) is not carried out, the Priest may no longer Absolve the Confessor. The particular Priest may no longer receive the Confessor in the Confessional, either.

The above is rare though.

FYI - I'm not trying to influence your thoughts here, but am supplying information on the processes involved in the Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation.

I don't know how much this is about 'freedom of religion'.
The issue, I think, is that the Catholic church believes that confession is necessary for the soul's redemption and is the first step towards rehabilitation. If the sanctity of the confessional is removed, if priests are required to report crimes that are confessed, then crimes will no longer be confessed.
So what?

Confessed or not, the crimes continue.
