California national guards troops and marines deployed to Los Angeles to help restore order after days of protest against the Trump administration have told friends and family members they are deeply unhappy about the assignment and worry their only meaningful role will be as pawns in a political battle they do not want to join.

 
Saturday is not going to be a happy day for the nation, even many of trump's supporters in Congress won't be attending. I wonder if he'll threaten them while he's talking about the army?
 
Trump using the military this way is unconscionable. I feel certain most Americans do not want to see their military used like this. I have a feeling the military parade and Trump's speech will likely reinforce that negativity.

The armed forces throughout the ranks and across the services hate policing deployments on US soil. This is nothing new and is historically well known. The Pentagon doesn't want it, the commanders on the scene don't want it and the grunts themselves hate this with a passion.

This was true entirely in 1992, it's true now in LA and it's true everywhere about civil disturbances and disorder. The first duty of the armed forces is violence against a foreign enemy force with overwhelming firepower which is a totally unsuited mindset for application in civil disorders at home. Forces across the services are untrained or poorly trained for the rare once in a decade if ever deployment to any civil disorder.

They want nothing to do with it. The Blood Lusting Generalissimo thinking he can and at will abuse the armed forces to abuse unarmed civilians on US soil is pissing up a rope.
 
LIke I said in the other thread, Orders are orders.

The problem with using the National Guard for Civil Disturbance is that their training on it is very limited. When I was in the guard a lifetime ago, they spent one day a year on how to wave the batons around in a straight line. And we usually didn't have enough batons to go around, so some of us had to share.

The Guard's CD training is very risk-averse. They don't want a repeat of Kent State, where the draft dodgers in the guard shot the draft dodgers on campus.

So you think if you repeat the gossip more stridently then it has to be true and stops being anonymously source.

The point is to break the armed forces, to make them into the blunt instrument that can be used as a personal goon squad they want. That is the point, they know the Guard and the Marines aren't trained in crowd control and are the wrong people for that. But that is exactly the point. They want the wrong people in the wrong place, to make them complicit, to erase the border between loyalty to the nation and loyalty to the leader.

It's actually a little worse than that.

Most of the people they are activating are from Military Police units.

What do these people do in their civilian lives? They are mostly cops.

So you are pulling cops off the street as cops and putting them on the street as guardsmen, where they are limited in what they can legally do.
 
The Army National Guard is still trying to live down Kent State in 1970.

USA active duty forces are not the PLA in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Trump is running the risk of mutiny against any kind of orders to do immigration roundups with ICE and other alphabet soup federal LEA that would require larger numbers of troops than the way too many we see now at this tiny spot in central LA.

USA military history includes several small mutinies that were resolved successfully but a mutiny against the national roundup and deportation of millions of people would be drastic at such a broad and high level and clash of authority.

Your MAGA problem is that as a MAGA you cannot disprove what's being reported, what's known and felt throughout the armed forces and what I'm posting about it.

They’re guarding executive branch buildings and escorting ICE during operations so they aren’t murdered by the mob. Why is that unconscionable?

You may have bought that load but he is doing it to score political theater. Using military that way is unconscionable.
 
It is difficult to take the article at face value, the overwhelming majority of the article is about the spat between Trump and Newsom / Californian over examples of Marines or National Guard opening complaining about the civilian and military leadership or moral. References to prior activities, examples from 1992 and so forth, become anecdotal from a reporter who was a Marine. I cannot imagine the military being happy about this assignment but that is my speculation.

At the end of the day the whole thing becomes window dressing for a bigger argument based on political perceptions.

Trump is busy going after Newsom insulting the state and various cities in, it is political between the two and always has been. Newsom is pushing back ignoring what has become a real mess that he has no answer to. Not the first time we've had example of California liberalism being unable to address issues they largely cause. Resource management, homelessness, skyrocketing residential costs, and now this mess. But Trump is *pretending* to have a solution hiding behind the power of the military and ICE.

But this whole thing is rooted in a conservative position of who belongs in this nation and in what regard, the sentiment is very old and clearly not dying off generation to generation.

White nationalism is the root issue, using the military to go after people is making it worse, it always does, and I contend that neither Trump nor Newsom have the first **** to give over the actual people being harmed by their little spat. They are collecting points for their team all the while no one is really talking about the social and economic implications of kicking out so many.
