A review of Toyota's new EV. It has Lidar!

Toyota’s joint venture in China, GAC-Toyota, unveiled official images of the bZ7 this week, its new flagship all-electric sedan.

The bZ7 is 5,130 mm long, which is slightly longer than the Tesla Model S and BYD Han L. Although it has Toyota’s updated “hammerhead” front end design, like the new Camry and Crown, the flagship EV is a big step up from the Toyota vehicles we see on the road today.

Weird. It said how long it was but not how much it weighs.

Toyota’s new Chinese flagship EV is, honestly, pretty impressive

Fixed that for you. That car will never be sold in the US.

It certainly is a pretty car, but without specs it's hard to say just how "impressive" it really is.

I know, we can’t get the good cars in this country anymore.

It's nice, but the cockpit is kinda boring. I don't see any knobs or dials. What are people supposed to do on a long car ride without a knob to play with or dials to tweak?

Apart from boredom, there's a lot to be said for physical air con and other buttons. I know some manufacturers have abandoned on-screen controls in touch-screen mode to go back to knobs and dials.

I had a Ford Edge that had 3 steps on the screen to get to the air conditioning and heated seat controls. That was annoying as hell when you're driving in city traffic and your ass is on fire.

Why not? You import Buicks, Volvos and Mercedes-Benz from China.
Very few. And, with high tariffs fewer are sold.

Furthermore, those Toyota EV's are being produced for the Chinese market and won't meet US DOT requirements.

You don't know that.
Copilot knows it.

will the new toyota flagship EV being produced in China be sold in the us

🚘 Toyota’s new flagship EV, the bZ7, is being developed and produced in China—but it’s not currently slated for sale in the U.S.

Here’s why:

🇨🇳 Designed for China’s Market

  • The bZ7 is a large, tech-heavy electric sedan co-developed by GAC-Toyota, featuring Chinese innovations like:
    • Huawei electric motors
    • HarmonyOS infotainment system
    • Xiaomi smart home integration
    • Lidar-based ADAS from Momenta2
  • It’s part of Toyota’s “China-first” strategy, meaning it’s tailored to local consumer preferences and regulatory conditions.

🚫 U.S. Market Barriers

  • Tariffs: Chinese-made vehicles face a 25% import tariff in the U.S., making them less competitive.
  • Regulatory hurdles: U.S. safety and emissions standards differ significantly from China’s, and the bZ7 may not currently meet DOT and EPA requirements.
  • Localization strategy: Toyota has emphasized that the bZ7 is a flagship for its China BEV lineup, not a global release.

  • Regulatory hurdles: U.S. … emissions standards differ significantly from China’s, and the bZ7 may not currently meet … EPA standards.

Looks like Copilot doesn't know...

US standards are much more stringent than Chinese standards. (If you want, I can provide information about that.)

Since this car will be made for the Chinese market, it WON'T be produced to US standards. Toyota wants to sell the cars in China. They won't deliberately add to the price of the cars when they don't have to.

As I said...that car will never be sold in the US.

It has Lidar which makes it very advanced. It may already exceed DOT specs.

shrug...

Let me know when you find out it does. I may change my opinion about whether it'll be sold in the US.

But that still doesn't mean anyone in the US will buy it.
