Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Carlos Ruiz learned a lesson the hard way: Never put “Baby” in a corner.
In a now-deleted Instagram post this week, Ruiz can be seen pointing toward a photo of a U.S. soldier with a myriad of medals strewn across his chest and arms.
“Uniform standards have entered the group chat!” Ruiz wrote in the post. “Exhibit A: This is what it looks like when we don’t have a standard. Make sure to check out MCO 1020.34H for all uniform guidance!”
Ruiz blurred out the soldier’s face, but it took users mere seconds to clock that the photo Ruiz was referring to was of Audie Murphy — nicknamed “Baby” — the single-most decorated American combat soldier of WWII and one of the most decorated American service members of all time.

Do you want to go full idiot? Because that's how you go full idiot...

The Sergeant Major admitted his mistake and apologized. He has my respect.

I daresay if you show a picture of Audie Murphy to a group of Americans...whether in any branch of the military or not...nine out of ten wouldn't know who the guy is.

I don’t think even 10% would know him by his picture, nor know anything about him.

I'm not sure that's valid. Mr. Murphy became a movie star after his military service, working in a number of movies made in the 40's, 50's, and 60's.

I recall watching several of those when I was growing up.

However, I suppose among the younger generations of today post 1960's only those who also like "old" movies would recognize him.

I’m familiar with his movies, but I don’t think anyone under the age of 60 would have any clue. How many people watch movies made more than 20 years ago?

Meh, not surprising.

Crooked donnie trump shits all over our service members and you offer him support. We could even call it "full throated" support I guess? 😂 (y)

trump grave.webp

Please don’t bring Trump into this. We’re discussing a war hero.

Earlier today I posted a picture of a great American hero, Audie Murphy. In poor taste, I linked his uniform to today’s regulations. My sincere apologies, as I meant no disrespect. There is a history linked to that photo and why his decorations are where they are. It shouldn’t have happened and there are no excuses
That's what we call an actual apology. He tried to make a joke, it was the wrong person to joke about.

Well, IMO that all depends on the age and personal interests. For example, young children may enjoy watching the older Disney movies like the Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, and cartoons like the original Snow White, Cinderella, etc.

Western buffs may enjoy all sorts of movies starring people like Clint Eastwood, and those into spy movies starring Sean Connery.

But then again, movies these days are mostly about the pyrotechnics and CGI monsters...

Kid’s movies, you have a point.

Westerns, does anyone watch old westerns anymore?

In the photo Murphy is wearing his awards in the correct order of precedence. The rack holder for medals was not produced until after WWII as pointed out in the Marine Corps Times.

Ahh, the good ol' Army Summer Tan uniform we thought was great to wear and for the look. Then in the 1960s the Army pulled 'em out of service for the Summer Army Greens made of synthetics. Now both uniforms are gone. As the troops say, if you don't like the Army uniform wait a while cause it will change. The current Army Standard Wear Uniform is the resurrected WW II one that says "victory."

In response to the post, Ruiz faced a sea of roasters on Army and Marine Reddit pages alike.

“Love how he blurred out the face as if it’s not an iconic picture,” one user wrote on r/army.

“Out of all pictures on God’s green earth why would he use that picture[?]” another commented.

A spokesperson for the Marine Corps told Military Times they backed Ruiz’s apology. The service told Task and Purpose the post was an “unforced error where the message being sent should have used a Marine as an example,” and there was no intent to “disparage a great American Soldier.”

Indeed, Ruiz needs to be put on inventory taking for a while. Hide his face for a period of time.

To my non-military eyes, this all seems very innocent. Murphy was presumably chosen as an iconic figure, with face blurred perhaps to test the reader. The old way of wearing the medals presumably was used to showcase how much "neater" in some sense the new regulations had made the uniforms. The choice of a hero seems appropriate to my eyes, because the writer's intent, even though promulgating regulations, is not to put down his audience, but to say that even if you're a war hero you can still look out of keeping with whatever aesthetic the military men perceive in their current system. The critics, on the other hand, don't want to see a war hero held in a bad light even when the reader ought to know the critique is clearly invalid. Nothing in this from any side seems wrong to me, apart from my general lack of understanding why military people are so obsessed with appearances.

Ruiz is stupid.

Ruiz was not trying to "make a joke."

He was doing a stupid thing no one else had tried before him which is since WW II. The guy is stupid. He's got real and better things to do.

Thank.

I do, I love westerns starring John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, and James Stewart. I also like non-westerns they starred in.

(Last post on the movie topic. Sorry for the topic deflection, was unintentional).

Too bad they don’t make them peel potatoes anymore.

Thank.

I love old movies too, but I doubt those like us make up much more than 1% of the population.

Or clean out the mess hall grease pit.

That was the pits for sure.

I think there's still some potato peeling going on by grunts but I'm not sure about that any more. Someone more recent than I could fill me in on it.

We are not talking about the average civilian Joe or Jane walking down the street...this is the highest-ranking NCO in the USMC.
Junior servicemembers, perhaps, but Senior NCO's and Officers? Let alone the most Senior NCO of a service?
If you do not know names like Audy Murphy, John Basilone, Alvin York, Roy Benevidez. Smedley Butler, Dan Daly, Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart, Desmond Doss, and Louis Millet then you have no business being the Senior most NCO of a service...particularly when you are a combat arms branch.

The above named MOH recipients are well known and have Chapels, Clinics, stadiums and fields, theaters and learning institutions named after them....even clubs and competition boards.

His movie autobiography "to hell and back" should be seen by all

No service wanted him....too small they said

What is it they say about the the size of a mans heart? and his will?

How many people need to get self-owned by social media before they get a clue and count to ten before hitting “SEND?”

I know who he is, but I think as you go below 50 the odds will increase sharply that people will not know who he is.

Your political girlfriend called them suckers and losers.

And he has your respect too.

I take the Sargent Major’s word.

He made a mistake and owned up to it. Let it go.

The SMAJ wouldn’t sound like such an idiot if he just adhered to the rules of never bad mouthing another’s service.🫡
