I don't know if I have ever used profanity here or irl, but I completely agree with Walz. He's speaking the truth, he isn't pretentious, he is an overall good guy.
MAGAs don't like him for that reason.

Did we ever actually have a moral or ethical center? Or “values”?

I mean, truly. We pay lip service to them…”give us your tired” “shining beacon”…catchy rhetoric, but let’s look beyond the cover of the book at American history. We are greedy and selfish and have been as long as we have existed.

Before we were even the US, we decimated Native Americans. We enslaved people. We murdered and went to war with ourselves over that.

We didn’t get involved in either WW until Americans or America got attacked. We turned away refugees at our shores. We locked up people in this country simply for their nationality.

We’ve meddled in the politics of one country after another around the planet, we have waged wars for bullshit reasons.

And that’s just foreign policy and slavery/mass murdering and incarceration of “others”. Not even touching on our domestic policy failures and shortcomings.

We are mean, we are greedy and we are heavily armed. As a people AND as a country.

And I don’t know what it will take for us to be the country we try to pretend to teach kids that we “are” in those bullshit history books we hand out. We seem to be getting worse instead of better.

Maybe the generations coming up will change it. I’ve lost faith in the ones old enough to have a say at this juncture.
