Tillis becomes third GOP senator to oppose Trump’ s big, beautiful bill

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis (R) announced after a meeting with Senate GOP leaders and colleagues Saturday afternoon that he will vote “no” on both the motion to proceed and final passage of the Republican megabill to implement President Trump’s agenda because of deep cuts to federal Medicaid funding.

Tillis said he wants Senate Republican leaders to drop their plan to lower the cap on healthcare provider taxes and instead embrace the Medicaid language passed by the House last month, which would cut much less federal funding in the program.

Tillis got the permission slip and not Collins.

That’s interesting.

More are apt to flinch at the PAYGO (or lack thereof) parts of this mess.

This monstrosity of a bill is the ugly signature legislation of the authoritarian Potus Trumph. Republicans in the House and Senate know they must deliver it for the party -- and for their own survival if they vote to kill it. As with everything the bill is about Trumph who controls his party. And in the final vote that lies ahead if it's down to one single senator only to kill it, she will not be THE ONE.

What's "the permission slip?"

We'll see.

Just a turn of phrase.

Republican leadership has 3 no votes to pass out in the Senate (same in the House, I think. Not sure). Who gets them is the question. Hawley is out, already. He is a yes vote.

I thought Collins would get one.

Maybe she'll vote no anyway. She's getting old to be looking at another term.

So...who's going to be the "McCain" this time?

I think she already announced she is running again.
SMH

She is one of the most powerful wheeler and dealers in the Republican party and makes them gobs with fund raisers, but she should button it up, imo, before Trump takes her down with the ship.

When do they vote?
Soon, from what I've heard. The Senate some time this weekend and then the House again by the 4th.

She is 72... they probably consider her a kid in the Senate by Washington standards. She could serve another term and still get in a presidential run.

I thought I heard, however, her approval rating in Maine was 14%.

That said, she has been safe because I don't think you could run someone to the right of her or anyone that actually had conviction (that means ideals and will, not the Trump kind of conviction(s)) and win in Maine against a solid Democrat.

The woman is a drama queen without a real moral compass. If she actually voted 'no' they would have a problem, but she lacks the balls..... she will write a terse email to "To Whom it May Concern", then leave it in her draft box calling it all good.

I lost any respect I had for that woman when she announced she would not vote to convict Trump because she thought he had learned is lesson. Either she is naive or thinks everyone else is..... though she would be correct on the latter.

The ONLY powerful wheeler/dealer in the Republican party is Trump.... The rest of them are dead fish.

Being a "no" vote that doesn't actually kill the bill is usually a vote for show..... If he were a "no" vote AND it actually made a difference (led to a problem getting the bill passed) then I would be impressed, but I am not. Usually the people whipping the vote let certain people in tough districts look good with a planned dissension. He is up for election in 2026 in a seat he could lose. The Reps need him in his seat more than they need his vote. Count me as cynical of his motives here. I hope he has an academy award performance in his feigning of outrage.

So...who's going to be the "McCain" this time?
Gone are the days of people of conviction.... now we just have convicts that lord over them.

I think Collins is gone this next election. Her approval has really tanked.

And I think Tillis is in serious danger in 2026. Particularly if Roy Cooper enters the race.

...which is why Thune and Trump will let him vote 'no'... Again, I look forward to his Academy Award nominated performance as he feigns outrage.

The article says she'll win anyway. Like I said before, we'll see. You sound disheartened and cynical, bitter. Too much politics --go to the beach, Guy.

McCain wasn't a man of "conviction". He was all about the power, influence and money. Hell, he lied to his voters. Told them he would repeal Obamacare. But when it came time to vote he was thumbs down. And the only reason he did that was because he knew he wouldn't have to suffer the consequences. He knew he wasn't going to be running for another term.

So, my question stands...who will be the "McCain"?

I just want to point out that this is not an opposition to Trump's "big, beautiful bill" so much as rejecting the Senate version of it.

Unless a fourth republicant Senator votes no the BBB bill can pass.
