"What my bill does is it specifically goes after TikTok — it bans it. It doesn’t ban any other app, but it also requires a comprehensive report to Congress on the national security threat" the app poses and its relationship to the Chinese Communist Party, Hawley told reporters on Capitol Hill. "But listen, I welcome all efforts to ban TikTok, of whatever form it takes."

TikTok is a scourge on society. It provides the communist Chinese government a backdoor into the United States. It is a classic Trojan horse. TikTok's parent company has already admitted they were using the app to spy on American journalists.

The question is, why are people insisting this isn't a problem? China bans Facebook and google, and we allow this horrific app to infiltrate and jeopardize our national security.

From what I've read TikTok is a clear threat to national security. Why hasn't it been banned? My guess is money.

Democrats have been kicking their feet.

For them to ban TikTok they would have to admit Donald Trump was right in trying to ban the app when he was president.

Ego and pride is preventing TikTok from being banned.

Yeah, no.

In December last year, the Pentagon advised military personnel to remove TikTok from smartphones. In January, different branches of the US military began heeding that advice, even encouraging personnel to remove the app from their personal devices too.

That followed a request by US senators Chuck Schumer and Tom Cotton for an assessment of the risk to national security presented by Chinese platforms such as TikTok.

Meanwhile, Representatives Mike Gallagher, a Wisconsin Republican who now wields clout over how to counter Chinese influence in the US, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Illinois Democrat from Illinois, said they plan to team up with Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, for a similar measure.

Yeah, no.

President Joe Biden has revoked an executive order from his predecessor Donald Trump banning Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat in the US.

The ban faced a series of legal challenges and never came into force.

Instead, the US Department of Commerce will now review apps designed and developed by those in "the jurisdiction of a foreign adversary", such as China.
It should use an "evidence-based approach" to see if they pose a risk to US national security, Mr Biden said.

Biden had a chance to execute the executive order by Trump but failed to so.

I am fine with banning tiktok

Trump was supposed to ban it back in fall 2020. Then they gave his friend Larry Ellison money, and Trump seemed happy with that outcome.

Banning Tiktok is not a bad idea though. Nothing of value will be lost. (except anyone with a VPN will still be able to go on TikTok because allowed in the rest of the World).

Would your opinion change if TikTok let Andrew Tate back on?

Fifth Amendment: "No person shall be ... deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

And yeah, Josh my man, destroying someone else's property without just compensation is "taking" of it.

TikTok is a scourge on society.

So you're OK with nationalizing all payday lenders, alcohol producers and vendors, drug producers and vendors, pornographers and porn stars ... everyone that someone out there thinks is a "scourge on society" ...?

I like to think we're better than the Chinese, particularly when it comes to free speech. But the more of your posts I read, the less I think that. Is there any country on Earth whose low standards you won't sink to?

Hawley named the bill, "The Nancy Pelosi loves TikTok Ban."

Ban Tik Tok?

Where would the young folks go for their next Tide Pod challenge for ****s sake?
eating tide pod rumors and theories started during their launch in like 2012, then got more around 2015 and it was on Twitter and Tumblr
"Tiktok" was launched 2016 family some other apps like Musical.ly rolled into one

You mean the ban that a federal court handed Trump his ass on?

Really? With ”Medicare For All” congress would (effectively) ‘ban’ for-profit medical care providers and (most) private medical care insurance.

This bill establishes the Medicare for All Program to provide all individuals residing in the United States and U.S. territories with free health care that includes all medically necessary care, such as primary care and prevention, dietary and nutritional therapies, prescription drugs, emergency care, long-term care, mental health services, dental services, and vision care.

Only public or nonprofit institutions may participate. Nonprofit health maintenance organizations (HMOs) that deliver care in their own facilities may participate.

Patients may choose from participating physicians and institutions.

Health insurers may not sell health insurance that duplicates the benefits provided under this bill. Insurers may sell benefits that are not medically necessary, such as cosmetic surgery benefits.

Oh, he banned it via executive order then a federal court handed him his ass

Okay, no. That's bs. We have universal healthcare in Finland, and still we also have for profit private medical care providers.

I’m simply stating what specific proposed legislation would have done, while it may be BS it was proposed, none the less. “UHC” is a term applied to lot’s of very different medical care and/or insurance systems.

I never supported "Medicare for all" and nor did most Democrats*. I see value in rich people paying for cutting-edge treatments which later become cheaper and able to be covered by "Medicare for most." That works in other countries.

In any case, government subsidizing services which make other services less profitable is not "taking". If you think it is, perhaps take your smart idea to the coal and gas producers (who obviously can't afford legal talent of their own.) Or maybe the internet majors who got beaten to broadband in Utah.

*124 co-sponsors, seems they did.

Well, there's certain House Representative who would vote against this.

If TikTok was banned, he'd have to cry in his beer instead of crying on TikTok.

Whether or not you supported that bill makes no difference, congress has banned all sorts of things without compensating those who (previously) made the banned goods or services.

We should be joining an interesting list of nations who have already banned, or severely restricted, TikTok.

India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran (just based on a quick search, there may be a better list out there somewhere.)

Even with this list I am not sure I care one way or the other, but I will offer banning the platform suggests demand for something similar will have someone, somewhere, come up with an alternative. And I highly doubt everyone on TikTok will flood back to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc.
