Three Georgia Republicans who falsely claimed to be electors for Donald Trump — and are now charged alongside him in a sprawling racketeering indictment brought by local prosecutors — say they took the steps they did because Trump, then the sitting president, told them to.

In a series of court filings this week, those false electors, who became part of Trump’s last-ditch bid to subvert the 2020 election, said it was Trump and his campaign lawyers who urged them to sign the false documents, claiming they were necessary to preserve Trump’s flailing court efforts to reverse his defeat to Joe Biden. That exhortation from Trump’s campaign lawyers, they said, amounted to federal government permission to take the actions they did.

I said it is not surprising, and all things considered the information these three fake electors are saying *is already* a core part of the case against Trump. I would go so far as to say the reason we are hearing about this is the possibility of codefendants flipping.

Many of the charged Georgia GOP "fake electors" held a closed meeting in the state Capital which was penetrated by Georgia journalist (George Chidi) who recorded much of it on his cell phone before being discovered and removed.

During the meeting, these defendents (David Shafer et. al.) never mentioned being ordered to do this by Trump. They only talked about how they could pull this off without anyone noticing until it was too late.

I tend to go the other way on this, not surprised since we do have a handful of people who are seeing the results of going all in supporting Trump only to have their lives forever changed. Hence, how often I say something to the effect of "throwing their careers, if not lives, away at the alter of Trump." The raw number of people involved must have some impact on these guys facing real jailtime.

Happy to admit, and I have often, that I am very skeptical these days of convictions and/or implications preventing Trump from doing what he does. Would be nice to see someone held accountable for the damage done to this nation, but I have my doubts.

Regardless, I agree none of this is good for ole' Donnie and he is going to need an awful lot more orange makeup for his court appearances facing what seems to be people flipping in order to salvage their futures.

I get the feeling this might be the case as well, and probably because if the feel Trump may not fare well out of all this, they'd rather save themselves than risk jail time.
