They're Going Overboard with security in Washington D.C.

First is the obscene number of National Guardsman being deployed there. Now I heard on the news that the police have requested 50 caliber machines guns!!!

50 caliber machine guns can stop any vehicle short of a main battle tank and can shoot down jet fighters and helicopters. Is there any evidence at all that pro Trump fanatics have any access to armored vehicles and combat aircraft? Yet somehow the police think they need them? WTF!!!

The source of all this seems two fold
1) Authorities are terribly embarrassed about that small riot last week and are classically overcompenating.
2) Authorities want to mass such an overwhelming force that any possible hostile actions by crowds is completely deterred.

If it is the first, then there is no justification for such a force. If it is the second, there is still minimal justification for it.

Seems to me that several hundred members of Congress really got freaked out when they had to take cover for probably the first time in their lives no matter how brief it was. Remember that four of the five who died in this riot were rioters. Tragic as it was, only one law enforcement officer was killed.

Disgraceful as the riot was, the reaction seems way, way overblown to me.

The right wing extremists could always go after other targets if DC is too tough a nut to crack for them.

It would appear that the Capitol Police decided that they needed a wee bit of (perhaps temporary?) supplemental support in addition to the additional fencing topped with razor wire.

Yet, armored personnel carriers for police officers is all good with you, right?

I think this is the first time I've heard the right complaining about a police force having too good of equipment. I wonder why that is...
 
If I were into protests and wanted to drive 1.5 hr. to DC, I'd do what I did the last time I saw a National Guardsman. I walked up to him and his partner and thanked them for their service, then started a conversation about the weapons he/they trained with. We spoke for about 15 minutes on guns and some of what he/they did in the Guards. Great guys they were, very polite and genuine Americans.
 
There is a very real possibility that these extremists may try and assassinate a duly elected President. Seems to me that calls for some pretty serious security. I also think that these insurrectionist only understand one thing .......bigger guns than they have.

It makes me bust a gut laughing when all summer long increasing the police force was not only railed against but defunding the police was the left's war cry. Now, all of a sudden, we need to clamp things down tightly and bring on as many police and National Guardspeople as we can get and it is OK to shoot unarmed white women who are no threat to you. During the summer this was called inciting violence. Now the left wants it.

You do realize that they are talking National Guard units and not police? You dlo understand the difference? The same National Guard units that are doing much of the fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan? Of course they have to be better armed than the police and that is why they are called out in situations like this. And the white woman shot in the Capital was violating the law and was told the police were there with weapons drwn and she decided to attack. And like you right wingers always say, the police inside did not know she was not armed and were not only in fear of their own lives, but were there to safeguard the lives of the congress. She was not a black woman lying in bed when shot eight times.

Of course not. I've long been against the militarization of police. Didn't you see my thread not too long ago calling for "more horses, fewer tanks (that is armored vehicles)".

I still don't consider it a Nazi avatar. Do you know what my new avatar is? They are the name badges I had for all but one of the schools I taught at. Kind of a symbolic resume. I had the idea for awhile. I think it's kind of cool.
 
I really doubt the police have 50 caliber machines guns. In an urban environment that would be very dangerous for the innocent population.

I just heard it reported on FoxNews for a second time that the Capitol Police had requested the weapons. No answer as to whether they had been granted or not.
