Glad Petey Hegseth is focused on important things.

Happy 1984. MAGA!

Whatever draws you in, the library has something for everyone. Celebrate National Library Week, April 6 - 12, 2025.

I have a...concern that I feel like I shouldn't need to have, but...

There is some record of these books elsewhere, yes?

That is DEI and needs to be removed immediately from the library.

That is not the point at all. Do you want your government telling you what you can and can't read?
Nope, I don't want that.
But I also don't want information destroyed, and I wouldn't put it past them to do so.

I just emailed and called my state reps because my assbackward trumptard state has HUGE cuts to libraries in the works. I urge you all to do the same, posting here accomplishes nothing really.

Our Republican governor actually wants to keep the funding the same as it was last year, our maga trumptard legislature though wants large cuts.

You know. Because books are some pretty Bad Hombres.

No books should be removed from libraries for adults. This is dumb.

Its not dumb if your goal is to repress independent thought.

How about "dangerous?"

Once they geet a taste for banning books in school libraries, they were apt to bite off more.

Nobody visits libraries anymore.

Nobody visits libraries anymore.
<------------------Nobody.

Plus...

In 2022, U.S. public libraries saw about 671 million in-person visits, a significant decrease from the 1.25 billion visits in 2019, the year before the pandemic shutdowns.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • 2022 In-Person Visits:
About 671 million people visited U.S. public libraries in person in 2022.

  • Pre-Pandemic (2019) Visits:
In 2019, before the pandemic, there were roughly 1.25 billion in-person visits.

  • Decline:
This represents a substantial drop in in-person library visits, which have been declining for more than a decade.

  • Digital Usage:
While in-person visits have declined, the use of digital library resources has increased.

  • 2022 Digital Library Usage:
In 2022, 224 million people logged a session on one of the 300,338 computers in the nation's public libraries.

  • Gen Z and Millennials:
A 2022 study found that 54% of people aged 13-40 visited physical libraries within the past year, and 37% said they had used their library's digital collection.

  • Print Book Usage:
The study also found that survey respondents read and bought on average twice as many print books per month as any other category.

  • Library Visits per Capita:
The New York Public Library had the highest library visits per capita in the top 25 public libraries, with 5.06 visits per capita.

  • Other Libraries with High Visits per Capita:
Queens Borough Public Library had 5.04 visits per capita, and Los Angeles Public Library had 3.35 visits per capita.

That isn't what is happening here. It's the government deciding what books should be made available in one of their schools. When the government actually bans a book - as in, you cannot buy it, cannot possess it, cannot read it, then that would be the government telling you what you can and can't read.

I can't see the article or the list

That's odd since the one in my area is always very busy. Millions of people still love to read.

Nonsense. The books were banned from the Naval Academy Library. That's a ban. Many of those books have been banned from other libraries. This is the government restricting the 1st Amendment right to free speech.

If you own a bookstore, you can ban all the books you want. But the government banning books is unconstitutional, dangerous, and leads to slippery slope or further restrictions on free speech. Turns my stomach, really.

No, it's the government choosing to not have certain books at their schools. All schools do this. But, as I said, it shouldn't be done when the school is for adults.

The government has banned no books, that I know of. What is a book that's illegal for you to own or read?

I explained it the best I could.

I know. The government has "banned" those books from being on the shelves in the library at that particular school. They aren't banned as in you cannot buy them or read them.

It's dangerous, as we see, when politicians get involved in book banning.

Smoking is banned in public places but it's not illegal for one to smoke in their own space.

So, yes, the government has banned books in this library.

I don't think the concern, at this point, is that one can't find these books anywhere, it's that the government is policing thought.

It's not a school - the ban is at the Nimitz Library which is a library for servicemen current and retired.

About the Library

The Nimitz Library offers comprehensive library services to midshipmen and faculty. Service is also provided to USNA military and civilian staff and their family members, to personnel attached to the other activities of the Annapolis Area Naval Complex, and to local retired faculty members and retired military personnel.

The Department of Defence has helpfully put out a list here and clearly states it's the Nimitz Library.
