The Trump White House crossed a new threshold for political debasement this week

Senator John McCain

5/12/18

The White House probably thinks it cannot punish Kelly Sadler for her awful comment about John McCain because President Trump has also said nasty things about McCain. It may worry that showing her the door would set a troubling precedent for a president who may one day cross a very similar line. Welcome to the ongoing degradation of our political discourse. Destination: No end in sight. It is worth recording just where we are when key thresholds are crossed. What happened this week is worse than most anything we have seen — worse even, I would argue, than Trump questioning McCain's war hero status. What's more, the White House is trying to simply brush it under the rug, which means the bulldozer is pressing forward. Sadler reportedly said of McCain's opposition to Gina Haspel's nomination to be CIA director, “It doesn't matter; he's dying anyway.” The White House's response Friday was not to distance itself from the comment about the brain cancer-stricken Arizona senator, but to no-comment. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sadler is still employed but declined to go any further. “I’m not going to validate a leak one way or another out of an internal staff meeting,” she said.

The comment, as it happens, was first reported Thursday just hours after a Fox Business Network pundit suggested McCain had given up key information while being tortured as a prisoner of war — a claim for which the network soon apologized. But while Trump's favorite cable news company was quick to atone for merely airing someone else's view that crossed a line, the White House is apparently not going to take any public action for a staffer talking blithely about the death of an American war hero. Mostly, though, this all shows how unlikely the trend is to arrest itself any time soon. Either because the White House is afraid of setting a standard Trump cannot meet or because Trump is demanding it hold the line against the media's outrage cycle, it is serving notice there are more important things than Sadler's public accountability: things like confidentiality and politics. The White House's position on this kind of situation has always come down to not giving an inch. The upshot of that approach is an environment in which employees feel okay joking about death — and in which another comment will surely readjust the bounds of our rhetoric even more to the extreme.

This White House and all within are rotten to the core. Disgusting and inexcusable.

And the Left breathes a HUGE sigh of relief that someone leaked this disgusting comment, just in time to get their "hero", Eric Schneiderman, off the front page.
Keep beating the Kelly Sadler drum and hope she wipes Schneiderman off the Sunday pundit shows, or at least pushes his beating women to the D block.

I hate that this is happening to the McCain family.
I hate what the White House staffer said about McCain
McCain is an honorable man doing what he thinks is right.

BUT McCain admitted earlier this week he gave Comey the now famous dossier, and that he "would do it again." Considering the ripple effect that had on Trump and his Presidency and his personal life I cannot say I blame Donald Trump for not liking John McCain.

and don't bring up the comments Trump made about McCain being captured. If McCain's motivation for handing over the dossier(which he knew could torpedo Trump's entire Presidency) was because of a personal vendetta than that just makes McCain look like the petty one.

Should have stopped right there Joe. No American POW deserves to be attacked by a draft-dodging president.

yeah, that makes no sense. When Eisenhower was President you could attack his politics without someone saying "hey, he won World War II so you can't criticize him." It's moronic. His politics and his military service are totally different things.

Politically, he backstabbed the own Party's nominee for President. There is no excuse for that.

There's no excuse for a draft-dodging president to attack POW's or Gold Star families and widows. Never. Period.

How did McCain backstab nominee Trump?

And you also seem to turn logic upside down: attack Eisenhower’s politics while appreciating his service, we can agree agree that is ok. Trump attacked McCain’s politics AND his service AND does not consider apologizing when someone on his staff says he doesn’t matter since he’ll be dead soon.

The fish rots from the head down, as the saying goes.

Making jokes about death isnt funny? Tell that to Kathy Griffin. She took back her apology and the left cheered. Maybe this Kelly Sadler is auditioning for the hosting job of next years Correspondent Dinner.

Why shouldn't Kathy revoke her apology? When does the right apologize for any ****ing thing?

Google 'republican apologizes' before making any more dumb comments.

We all know these Republican apologies. "I'm sorry if your feelings got hurt" or "I'm so sorry I got busted ****ing that prostitute after hijacking your vote when I ran on that 'family values' platform." Get back to me when that little bitch apologizes for her "joke" about McCain. And when that happens, let me know if you actually believe it more than a week after she said she would do it.

Why so angry? And she did apologize to McCains family. Now why dont you just calm down. You have become so accustomed to being outraged, that you are now just in a constant state of outrage. TDS will do that to you though.

This thread is just further evidence that the right has zero ethics or morals to the point where the only bar they have is, "is it illegal?" And then turn a blind eye when they cross that line.

All from the ilk that used to club people with the "moral majority" label election after election after election.

What does it say about crappy McCain sending Harry Reid well wishes but not the First Lady of the US of A? Both have undergone surgery.

McCain may have been a POW but he certainly was a POS as a senator and a human being.
